i actually forgot about the double muff. i’m really interested in getting one. however, i’m thinking it sounds too similar to the nano muff, which i am not a big fan of. i got the nano muff from a friend for free and thought it’d be fun to play around with, but sadly it’s not.

That’s just the nature of the effect. It’s not supposed to have a wide tonal range. If you want to mellow that treble out, just use the tone knob on your guitar. I know most people aren’t crazy about the tone knob, but it can be useful in making low fi, dull attack sounds.

agreed, the Double Muff is wonderfully responsive to whatever’s going on with your guitar. Although I have to say that short of full gain, I have never used the word ‘harsh’ to describe the Double Muff… Are you running it first in line?
June 2, 2009 at 4:52 am #97242iheartehxMemberI used to have a Double Muff and I’m telling you, it’s straight out of 1969. Seriously. It sounds unbelievable.
June 3, 2009 at 3:02 am #97282st.bedeMemberIMHO the ddmuff is a particular pedal…when it works with a combination of guitar and amp it works great but when it doesn’t it really doesn’t….here is a demo of a number of different OD/Dist pedals from me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH9-QeRR_04&feature=channel_page and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cz2GClVCxDc&feature=channel
June 3, 2009 at 4:04 pm #97300Stoner WizardParticipantHello:
I recently (some months ago this year) purchased an EH Double Muff (cardboard box). Like other people said, is another member of the “Muff” family but cannot be mistaken with the Big Muff because th Double Muff is two Muff Fuzz cascaded circuits.
Today the, Nano Muff is the reissue equivalent for the 1969 Muff Fuzz, so there’s no Nano version yet for the Double Muff.
The operating is simple: If you’re in single mode, just tweak with the bottom knob only, which sets both the amount of volume and drive.
When you’re in double mode, the bottom knob still acts as a master volume while top knobs sets the amount of drive that is put into the second Muff so as a result, you can increase the gain a step further.
The volume knob is easy to match with bypassed signal but has more performance so you can boost the effect signal over unity gain.
It’s more effective than a Big Muff if you roll down the volume pot of the guitar to “clean” the sound (similar, but not reaching the levels of Fuzz Faces).
Also and very important, place it first at the signal chain to get the best results. Other positions will make it sound harsh and too trebly.
Definitely, is a good and affordable choice to get a classic sound (late 60’s & very early 70’s).
Regards from Spain.

I’d say that was accurate all round, especially this bit. Also and very important, place it first at the signal chain to get the best results. Other positions will make it sound harsh and too trebly.
nice summary of the pedal. :thumb:

The Double Muff in single mode and the Nano Muff sound a lot different!
June 30, 2009 at 4:02 pm #98640Stoner WizardParticipantHello again:
By the way. As I said on my first review that Double Muff works better when placed at first position in the chain, I recently discovered that Double Muff still performs nicely at second position with certain effects…
… yes!. If you have an MXR Blue Box (weird but fantastic effect) but you don’t want to mod it [like me] (because of it’s limited output volume range), put Blue Box first and Double Muff immediately after, then switch them on and be prepared for sonic demolition.
For some reason, the sound of the Double Muff interacts really well with the random two octave down fuzz of the MXR BLue Box, no matter you want to boost the MXR BB or you want to give more “thud” to Double Muff. The results are fantastic because there’s still lots of gain and output volume ranges (over unity gain), making BB more versatile with the Double Muff while the Blue Box gives Double Muff a drone-doomy style.
Also you can get a myriad of combinations using single and double modes of DM while tweaking with the Blend control of BB. Even at max. level of random two-octs. down!.
BB’s built-in noise gate acts as well as usual (taming the noise and unwanted feedback) but lets Double Muff sound as is.
The Double Muff at second position with this set-up still sounds pretty good itself and doesn’t turn trebly or harsh.
As I’ve tested, it suits better with p-90/Jazzmaster or medium-gain humbucker type coils than high-output humbuckers.
Regards and enjoy with DM!

June 30, 2009 at 10:00 pm #98669rafsbioMemberI use the DM as second in the effects chain as well. I use a MXR Dynacomp before it. Since the compressor is always on, I compensate the treble tone the DM gets as second pedal with the guitar tone knob. On my strat, if I roll back the tone to about 5, I get pretty much the same tone as the DM as first in chain, but with the compression from the MXR.
July 3, 2009 at 1:25 am #98809mattcaseyMemberif it helps anyone, i have one, i really like it.
i demoed it twice over a few months and got an english muff’n in between.
even still, i bought a double muff. it’s a very simple concept, but still diverse for what it is.
others might disagree, but i think i get a pretty similar sound from the 2 muffs as i do with my english muff’n.
i don’t like fussing with eq controls on my muffn though, so i’d say the double muff is WELL worth the $30 is costs used.
[edit] i might add that it’s not great after any effects. but it is nice as a boost before other ODs to get some high gain.
July 7, 2009 at 2:43 pm #98972rafsbioMemberI think both sound awesome! I might get one English Muff’n one of these days!
For me, with the Double Muff and a EQ control (from your amp, for instance) I can play from jazz to heavy metal!
