The newest xo deluxe memory men actually use four mn3008 chips instead of two mn3005’s check out analog man’s site, theres a ton of info on the dmm the chips and the differences

yes, but they were using mn3008’s in DMM’s before the XO switchover.

like it says in your link, 2006 models had mn3008, then they were using the mn3005 again in 2008 and the XO’s have mn3008, so the fact of the matter is both chips were used in the ‘big box’

They are all NOS japanese IC’s the only difference is one has double the delay stages, so they use 2 rather than 4 of them.

I ment there not using the same chips as the original reissues from the 90’s,

sure, I think the OP was just wondering if the XO version was different from the recent steel cased version….. which I suppose is yes and no depending on which ‘steel box’ version you have.

there’s no significant sound difference between any of the reissues from what I can tell and I guess that’s the important thing.

… and the Reticon sad1024s were used prior to the mn3005s back in the mid to late 70s.

The DMM has gone through a lot of stages in its evolution. So basically, if you like the one you have, stick with it for another 20 years, bond with it, get attached to it, get sentimental about it, and then you’ll be the guy saying, “This model has the best tone and response of all the versions.”

Yes but according to eh man
” The original Echo/Analog Delay Line and 4 knob Deluxe both used the Reticon SAD1024 delay IC. From my understanding, EH decided the chips were noisy and started using the Panasonic MN3005 delay IC instead. This was the reason the later models were quieter and had better delay effects. Most of the 4 knob Deluxes I’ve heard make a high-pitched whining noise in the background on the delayed signal. With proper setup, you can reduce this to a minimum, but it’s difficult to remove it completely.”

    and according to anolog man
“Theoretically, the less delay chips you have, each with higher number of memory positions to add up to the same amount of memory, the better the sound. But in reality there is little sound difference between two 3005 chips and four 3008 chips. But there are twice as many calibration points to dial in if you have 4 chips. Some delays have EIGHT CHIPS (ad999?), that must be a nightmare to calibrate…

so yes i am the guy sayin my version of the deluxe memory man is the best sounding, because it is, in my opinion, and isn’t that what “review your ehx gear” is about, your opinion of your gear?

of couse, feel free to write a review. It would be nice if it was a personal review rather than quotes from analoguman’s website though. ;)

I don’t even know why this thread was in the reviews section as it was more of a ‘help’ question ….. I’ll move it over now.

    Indeed. I wasn’t criticizing.

I have 3 different generations of the DMM, though I don’t think any of them have the 3008s. The 4 knob version is a completely different delay from the other later 2. But the other 2 also have subtle nuances that make them different.

So dmc777, i would recommend finding one of the reissues from the 90’s, based on my research and personal experience, i believe the memory men with the mn3005’s are the best model, theres a reason the same chips are used in the already legendary Diamond Memory Lane!
