no, I agree it doesn’t classify as ‘artist endorsement’ it’s more EHX endorsement from the band.
They do work though, I’ve seen a couple on ebay and a guy I know who used to work for the music press got sent one with the promo album for review.

if ehx were to start issuing artist models, they would have to do an awful lot of artist models… dean ween microsynth, david gilmour electric mistress, j. mascis big muff, the edge DMM, cobain chorus, jack white pog, and the list goes on.
that being said, if they were to release identical issues of the different ’70s muffs (much like mxr with the ’74 phase 90 and the ’76 dynacomp) i would be all over it. actually im sure most everybody would be, although the big muff with tone wicker sounds incredible and apparently the bass big muff is designed pretty similar to the old green sovtek big muff so they may be making a step in the ‘old muff’ direction anyways.
A good overdrive for the Gilmour sound would be the BK Butler Tube Driver. Although it is pretty expensive, it is one of the best overdrives out there, especially for David Gilmour tones. It is also used by Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani.
And about the Big Muff reissue thing, I would be all over one as well!

Then of course if you’re going to drop $400 on a David Gilmour Big Muff, why not hop on ebay and buy a ram’s head?

I think it’s the same, but others say it has a ‘higher gain’ or ‘different sound’ I don’t think any of these people have done an A/B with a stock one from the same year though so I wonder if it’s just something people say when selling on ebay to help the sales. it might have higher gain transistors or something I suppose, but I can’t imagine it’s really any different.

He used the Civil War Muff for the Pulse tour, and he has used a Pete Cornish P-1 live, but supposedly that is an exact clone of Gilmour’s Ram’s head for road use. Phil Taylor, David’s gear guy, said this about his RH –
“I introduced David to the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi in 1974. He liked it, and he has continued to use one ever since. David has tried many of the different incarnations and models over the years, but his original has often been preferred for most things. Finding another that sounds the same is not easy, I have even placed six in a row that externally appeared to be identical to his original, and they all sounded different. Often, when you look inside, some components and values are different…”RH Muffs do vary a lot from unit to unit, and components and values are different from unit to unit. A DG Muff sounds like a good idea, but using modern components to make a production version sound like his original with vintage components, I’m sure would not satisfy David, nor anyone who bought one. It would not be any better than buying a decent Ram’s Head clone like the BYOC Large Beaver. Also, for $400 you could just buy a real Ram’s Head on ebay. You may have to go through a few to get one that sounds good.
By the way, the best Muff boosts for Gilmour tones are the BK Butler made Tube Drivers or the Colorsound Overdriver. A modded Boss BD-2 also works good, as well as Overdriver clones like the Vintage FX Colordrive and Throbak Overdrive Boost. A Tube Screamer does not work very well. I have to agree with dmc777 above though. I think Gilmour used boosters when playing live a lot, but probably not in the studio. I get that tone with a Ram’s Head Muff all by itself, or with a compressor up front. A really good Muff needs no booster.
I have some demo clips here of different gear to get decent Gilmour tones.

Most of also know he as a huge Big Muff user. Mostly old versions; like the Ram’s Head, The Triangle Knob and the Sovtec Civil War. I think a David Gilmour Big Muff would be amazing! Maybe based on one of the old versions with some of his preferred settings and sounds.
For this pedal, price is not in the question. I would happily pay $400 for one, if it was high quality.
Please tell me what you think. If enough people go on this tpoic, this dream may become a reality!
How about a DG mutli effect in collaboration with Pete cornish. Slap a Rams head big muff next to a 9v electric miss next to a memory man. Keep the values similar to daves set up based on direction from Pete cornish. All cornish style casing and switches but with EH logos and graphics. Set up a effects loop that you can put in before or after any effect to run your Tube driver and or possibly compressor. Best mutli effect ever made.
