Hi,
I’m lucky owner of your really good Crayon overdrive and I have 2 questions about it.
I read on your website that the Crayon is true bypass. But if I unplug the battery and the power supply, the signal didn’t pass anymore when the Crayon is turned off which indicate that the switch is buffered and need power to let signal path. So can you tell me why you indicate that this effect is true bypass?
Secondly I found that this ovedrive sound very close to a BBpreamp style of circuit, can you tell me if this crayon circuit is based on this or another famous overdrive?Thank you very much for you help.
Best regards.October 25, 2020 at 2:07 pm #126572EHX STAFFKeymasterPlease write the techs on Monday at
December 1, 2020 at 9:50 pm #126655pbexigaParticipantI have the same issue with true bypass on the crayon.
I contacted support and they assured me it was true bypass that something may have been wrong with my pedal. Since I was still within the return period I returned it one exchange for another one.
The new one has the same issue.
Did this ever get confirmed? Is the pedal true or buffered bypass?
I can provide a video of needed.
Shame because I really enjoy this pedal.

Hi,
I wrote to the support but no answer, for me this pedal seems to not be true bypass, the pcb are subcontracted in china maybe there was an error between the design and the manufacturing at the factory … i don’t know …

I wrote them an email as well. They responded saying the crayon is now buffered bypass. I asked why and the response was pretty generic. “to limit footswitch noise when engaging the effect”. Quite frankly I thinks it’s a relatively hollow answer. They mentioned they need to update their product information on the site.
It may be true though considering the hotwax pedal (which is this circuit and the hot tubes circuit in one pedal) is buffered. They may have updated the crayon circuit to make manufacturing simpler. Between the two pedals.
The Crayon is great but nonetheless I think I’m done with EHX pedals because of this.

It seems a correct answer, I owned Soul Food which if we switched it to true bypass made a “plop” noise when engaged quite unbearable. It is sometimes very difficult not to have a buffer, especially in a pedal of this price.
It will be necessary to put this pedal in the loop of a switcher or at the beginning of the chain to have an input buffer on the pedalboard if no other buffer already present.Anyway we have our answer the Crayon is not true bypass.
And if the circuit is based on Bbpreamp style we don’t know…December 11, 2020 at 8:44 pm #126674EHX STAFFKeymasterQuote:Quote:Quote:I have the same issue with true bypass on the crayon.I contacted support and they assured me it was true bypass that something may have been wrong with my pedal. You loved it until you found out it was buffered output?
If you could not tell before you were told then why would it matter?
And why would you shrug an entire brand because one has a buffed output.
A well designed buffed output prevents loading when using several pedals and prevents the popping when going into bypass.
Sorry your unhappy.
You will find many brands of pedals unacceptable because of this.December 11, 2020 at 8:46 pm #126675EHX STAFFKeymasterYOyo check your spam folder please.

It’s not about if I could have told the difference or not. Just doesn’t inspire confidence when a product description says one thing and the product is another.
Then to have support look at a schematic and say assertively that it is true bypass. I returned the pedal thinking it was defective to find the same and eventually be given the excuse of “oh yeah, we changed the design.”
Point is, I waisted two months with this ordeal just to find out that the product wasn’t what was described. That’s either bad quality control, or they just don’t have their stuff together.
Needless to say, I kept the pedal and do use it. But it’s my last ehx pedal for sure.
Thanks anyway!
