I’m about to purchase the K&K Big Twin piezo pickup and I’m trying to find out if I really need to get a preamp to go with it.
https://www.kksound.com/products/bigtwin.php#simple1
Workflow: Appalachian dulcimer > Big Twin piezo pickup > (preamp or not necessary?) > Cathedral reverb > mixing board or computer interface or sampler
Here’s what the kind folks at K&K told me:
“There is no absolute requirement for a preamp with our pickups however because the passive pickup tone is affected by the input impedance of the equipment (first piece) that you plug into this value must be taken into account. The pickups work best with 1 megohm impedance and so we should look at the specs of the first piece you plan on plugging into. If it is higher then 1 meg (5 and 10 are common) then you will get a boost in the bass response, which may be a good thing on your instrument (maybe not, depends on the instrument). Values below 1 meg will start to reduce the volume and frequency response of the pickup.”
Unfortunately this is a little beyond my realm of knowledge. Can anyone offer an opinion on whether it would be a good idea to place a preamp before the Cathedral reverb? (An Appalachian dulcimer is a fairly quiet stringed instrument with not a lot of bass BTW)
And what is the megohm impedance of the Cathedral reverb?
Kind regards,
A.
Hi A
In mono, the left input is 1M. When used in stereo each input is 2M
So you will be just fine!
Hey great news – looking forward to trying it out.
