I’m very interested in the Hot Tubes, especially since I got my English Muff’n in today (what a great OD, I must say). I’ve read that the Hot Tubes is a very different animal from the English Muff’n, but I’m not sure of what that really entails. If it can do a really nice high gain, BTBAM/Petrucci-style distortion, I’ll buy one on Friday.
Personally, I think it excels more at dark vintage distortion tones and overdriven tones. It does a great mid-rangey Mick Ronson saxophone style distortion – very vocal. The trebles are not crisp, which I usually think of when I hear someone say “high gain.”
How would you say it compares to, say, the Metal Muff?
I’ve never tried the Metal Muff. But I reckon it’s miles apart, as far as distortions go.
I have a hot tubes and it is clinically insane. I think it is bi-polar with mild schizophrenia. That’s the only explanation.
What about something like the Barber Dirty Bomb? Can it get sounds like that at all?
This thing oscillates like crazy if you get the gain too high. It also is very fuzzish at times and can get a really huge big muff sound. I would suggest you check out the Rocktron Silver Dragon (seriously it rocks my socks off), check out it’s harmony central reviews then pick one up on eBay for half the price!!!
