    Hey there,

I just got a DMB and think it’s an pretty awsome pedal. But still I’m considering to send it back, because I just can’t use it with my main amp (Framus Dragon Top). Here’s the problem:

I want to place the pedal in the FX loop, so I can use it in the crunch and lead channel, too. I tried it in front of the amp, doesn’t sound good at all. The problem using the DMB in the loop is that using the clean channel the pedal produces a very disgusting distortion if the gain volume is more than halfway up (I guess it’s the pedal that does the sound). I wrote Framus, they say that it seems that the output volume of the amp is too high for the DMB to compensate. I just can’t believe it… Nowadays all pedals should be designed to work properly in an FX Loop, at least “classical” loop effects like delay or reverb. What can I do? Or what do I do wrong?

There is no problem with the box (I’ve tested with two different boxes) and there can be no technical problem with the loop of the amp (I’ve bridged it and the sound stays the same). Moreover I’ve tried the DMB with two other amps in a loop and there it works pretty well. I just don’t get it. Or are the Dragon and the DMB just not compatible?!?!

    Please help! Thx!

Okay, I get why you are having gain issues with the effects loop, but I’m not sure you know what you’re talking about with the “doesn’t sound good at all” (before-amp delay).

the gain issues/fx loop problems are because of how an analog delay works- inside, there are typically three main chips- the ‘clock’ chip, which works with the ‘delay’ chip, and a compander (compressor+expander) chip, typically an NE570 or 571, which is set to the headroom of the delay chip. if you’re running extremely high gain signals, they’re going to get smashed down by the compander so that the delay chip isn’t going to be damaged by the signal.

that “I just can’t believe it” attitude will go away if you spend some time learning what your gear does. (and since when are delay and reverb classical loop effects? I don’t agree that there is a “classical” loop effects. effects loops are for
1- using shorter cables to get to your pre-amp and
2- using a low impedance output to drive a pedal – you get the same thing by using a buffered pedal as the first in your chain.)

To me loops are mainly a possibility to put gear (in this case a delay) AFTER the amp-distortion and the whole peramp section of the amp. Like I said, I tried to place the DMB in front of the amp; works quite well with the clean channel, but if I switch to crunch or lead, it just doesn’t sound the way I want it. So I guess I know what I’m talking about in this point, since I heard it… and it “doesn’t sound good at all” ;)

If I put the delay in the loop, it sound just fine in crunch and lead mode, but I get the problem I described above in the clean channel.

You might be right by saying that I don’t fully understand (technically) how my gear works. I’m not a tech, and that’s why I need help. I’m really into the sound of the DMB (like I said, I tried it with a few different amps and I sounded pretty good) and I definately do not want to send it back. But if I can’t get it working with my Framus Dragon Head, I guess I have to. :(
