I have a spare 16 ohm cabinet that I would like to use as a wet cab using either the Magnum or Caliber. But…
I am a little worried that the high impedance of the cabinet will result in a lower overall wattage than the product specification states. There seems to be no mention of impedance/wattage in the amps documentation.
If we take the Caliber for example; using conventional solid state logic we could assume that if an 8ohm cab outputs 22 watts, then the 16 ohm load would result in something around the 11 watt area.
My question is, is the Magnum and Caliber stated wattage based on an 8 ohm or a 16 ohm speaker load?
I just got the .44 mag. The instructions say it works with both loads but is best at 8 ohms. I’m not an expert but I don’t think the 16 ohm load will cut the wattage exactly in half but I could be mistaking.I’m going to use mine with a 8 ohm 2 x 12 cab. I have a 2 x 12 amp with a 16 ohm load. Even though they have different speakers, I’m going to hook up the .44 to both and do an A/B to see how different they are.
I look forward to the results.
It’s bizarre that there isn’t more info on this matter. Conceivably, you could get the same volume from a Magnum 44 into a 16ohm cab as you would from a Caliber 22 into an 8 ohm cab.
I’m sure it’s a whole bunch more complicated than the simple maths I’ve outlined in this thread so your AB experiment would certainly be of interest to me.
it’s also worth remembering that when you double the wattage of an amp you don’t double the volume, you get 3db more volume, so the difference between 22w and 44w isn’t as massive as you might imagine. You would be more likely to notice more/less headroom then more/less actual volume.
Well I tried the .44 Mag into both cabs. The 16 ohm cab seems to break up (distort) earlier that the 8 ohm cab. Remember there are different speakers involved so there is no science going on here. The relative loudness seems the same, I don’t have a db meter to measure. Now that I think of it, I should have used a recording device to measure the loudness and record the sound so I could review it. Oh well, next time.
