I had an idea today to put lesser high gain tubes in and see if it made a difference. Well it did but the volume dropped by half! and it wasn’t even compressing. So I am like you here I really don’t know what it is??? Any ideas anyone?
I just wonder, does anyone else notice this buzz and do you have any idea what it might be?? Or…. is it just the nature of the beast?
I’ll have to test mine to listen if mine has this problem. I’ve never noticed it before, and I’m hoping I won’t
Don’t test for it. Cause once you hear it. You will always hear it.

Second to my Fishman Rare Earth Blend acoustic guitar pickup, the Black Finger is the best guitar related purchase I’ve made in ten years. And speaking of acoustic guitars, I’ll never play another acoustic gig without a Black Finger if at all possible. It loves my Am Tele Dlx and LP Custom, but it makes love to my ears when combined with my acoustic w/ the Rare Earth.
I too have had the slight noise problem, but only in normal mode. I have already tightened the center screw, but have not tried new tubes yet. I’ll try it soon and post the turnout here.
April 16, 2010 at 6:56 pm #109265FarringdonMemberI just got a new Black Finger and it is MUCH louder in Normal Mode than in SQSH mode. There is a very loud hum even when the pre gain is low. SQSH mode is very quiet compared to NORMAL. I’ve tried electric guitar and vocals and both are unusable in NORMAL mode for recording.
Has anyone else experienced this or did I get a DUD? I have 5 days to return this…
Thanks.

Indeed, the Normal Mode is much louder than the SQSH mode on both my Black Finger units. That’s standard. I turn my PRE-gain up in Normal Mode, but I turn down my POST-gain to somewhere around 9:00. This keeps my bypass at unity volume.
Not sure about the hum problem. My units don’t have that issue.
April 16, 2010 at 9:27 pm #109119FarringdonMemberThanks for the response, much appreicated. On the Peter Stroud video demo (saw on youtube) he doesn’t seem to move the volume knobs when switching between Normal and Sqsh mode, and also both modes seem pretty quiet and hum/noise free.
Can you still hear a background hum on Normal mode when the pre gain is turned down to 0? My Black Finger hums even when it’s quiet, so it’s unusable especially for recording vocals or clean guitars.

No, that isn’t normal. Something is awry.
