    Hey folks,
New to the site here, but I’m curious if anyone knows if I can swap the 12ax7s inmy 4 year old Black Finger for a set of 6922’s? If not, does anyone have any recommendations on smoother sounding tubes that will work with the BF? I love the black finger as a light tube compressor to keep my levels in check, but when i begin to push the pedal (via a Silver Mod TS9 and an OCD) the overdrive is far to abrasive and covers the nuances that made me fall in love with my OD pedals in the first place. To be abstract about it, i’d like to find a tube replacement that provides clarity, if not leaning on the satin-y/smooth side.
I’m open to anyone and everyones suggestions, so let me know.

I’m very interested in this too.

I love my BF, along with my WF. Though, with some of my guitars, I get a slight static sound when the BF is on. Did a quick search and found that some people tightened the screw, under the tube sheild, and it went away. On mine, the screw did not move.

I assuming that the stock tubes are EHX? I bought mine used and there is a set of Nationals in there now. I have some onld GT 12AX7’s that I want to try.

you can replace it with any tube that you can normally replace a 12ax7 with. au7s or ay7s might make it not break up so hard. They’ve got less gain afterall.

My Tube EQ had that problem, but I don’t have that issue with my Black Finger, Tube Zipper, Hot Tubes, or Wiggler. I would send it in to EHX to fix it.

I haven’t tried switching out the tubes yet, but I’d be curious if anyone finds a set that makes a noticeable difference in the response.

Uhhhhh…. no. 6922 swap-in would be a bad thing (heh heh).
They prefer different heater voltages (i think(?)).

But as noted, any 12a**-style tube can be successfully swapped in for slightly less gain, and a little more clean headroom.

There’s a chart at “tubestore” showing relative gain of these tubes, here:

    http://thetubestore.com/gainfactor.html

Or you can try a 12dw7… instead of both triodes being identical, the first stage is a 12ax7 (gain of prox 100), the second stage is a 12au7 (gain approx 20), so it’s roughly the same gain as an at7, but i thought it responded differently. A little more… “airy” if that makes sense. ‘Course it could be all psychological (I drink a lot).

    Good luck!
