There were only some 2000 of these circuits made; Billy Corgan has a couple, so you can hear them all over Smashing Pumpkins recordings.
I emailed that guy to ask where he got his info from, thinking he may have an article or interview I did not have, but no luck. He said he got his info from my website! The info goes in circles sometimes.
There is the possibility that someone took a bad second edition V3 apart and replaced the pots and circuit with those from a later version. It does happen. I bought a V3 and V4 from the same guy on ebay. He took them apart for his ebay photos and put them back together with knobs and boards swapped for each Muff by accident. I have also seen Muff’s comped together from parts of other Muffs that did not work. That’s very rare though.
November 25, 2009 at 5:05 pm #104230visualdistortionMemberArf, but differents sources says that it will be an OP AMP version… so I think it will be the true.
We got the chance to choose between 2 models, it’s a good thingNovember 25, 2009 at 5:08 pm #104231KitraeMemberWell, they do say that now
December 10, 2009 at 9:32 pm #105156KitraeMemberFor comparison, here is the V3 using a Cherub Rock Mogg backing track. I layered several tracks with a Strat and Les Paul into a JCM800. I used a Sure SM57 mic into GarageBand. Excuse my sloppy playing.

http://www.kitrae.net/music/CHERUB_V4_Op-Amp_layered_LP_Strat_no_comp.mp3That V4 sounded really great there. The V3 sounded a bit too ‘pleasent’ to my ears.
December 10, 2009 at 9:59 pm #105160visualdistortionMemberOH Yes The Op Amp! it sound so fat! I have finished my opamp Big Muff today, and now I can affirm that the Pumpkins Muff is an Op Amp model!!!

That flat crushed fuzz is very unique to those op-amps. Not exactly the same tone as I hear on the record, but I’m not using the same mics, preamp, cabinet, or any EQ or compression in the mix. Here are Billy’s actual guitar tracks from Cherub Rock.
http://www.kitrae.net/music/Cherub Rock_Isolated_Guitars.mp3Still, the transistor V3 tone works great too!

Where did you find this Isolated Tracks?!
December 16, 2009 at 10:31 pm #105460KitraeMemberI pulled them from the Mogg files for Rock Band, which had the instruments isolated. That’s how I made the backing track I used.
I messed some more with my amp settings, dropping the mids way down, upping the bass, and turned the tone on the V4 down to about 9:00. I don’t think you can get any closer to the sound I hear in those SD tracks than this.
http://www.kitrae.net/music/CHERUB_V4_Layered_LP_Strat_flat_tone_w_comp_1.mp3It sounds great when I record it, but it is really hard to hear myself play at these settings with a BT or band playing. The V3 does not sound this good, but at least you can hear yourself play better. I understand why Billy stopped using this Muff live now.
December 16, 2009 at 10:52 pm #105461visualdistortionMemberSo cool, thanks a lot fot all your explanation about this, did you know if is it possible to extract tracks from Guitar Hero? because Cherub Rock is include in GH3 and in GH5 Bullet With Butterfly Wings, it will be great to get them too!(Cherub rock to compare with the rock band tracks and BWBW for compare muff sound and JMP1+compressor sound (the muff simulation for live))
December 17, 2009 at 4:58 pm #105483KitraeMemberI don’t think anyone has cracked the new encoding, but there were several Pumpkins songs from previous mogg vorbis rips rips on the web. Most of those links are dead now. Siva, Today, and several other songs had been ripped. If you find any active links for those multi tracks, let me know. I would love to make some good backing tracks out of them and isolate the guitar parts.
EDIT – I just found the Zero, Today, and Siva Moggs. I just need to make some mp3 clips in Audacity now.
December 17, 2009 at 11:03 pm #105494visualdistortionMemberOH so cool! Certainly “Today” will be aprouve our choice in the V4, great to ear Zero too (one of my favourit song from all the years)
December 20, 2009 at 4:56 am #105549KitraeMemberOK, I dug into a few of them. Here is an extract from Siva. Guitars in the left channel are different from the right. You can hear the Big Muff in the rhythm parts, but it sounds like there are several other fuzz tracks going on too, and I remember Billy or Butch saying there were multiple fuzz pedals and/or amps for this song.

http://www.kitrae.net/music/Siva_L_R_Isolated_Guitar_Tracks_ExcertptB.mp3Here are a few Excerpts of the Muff guitar tracks from Today. Again, guitars in left and right channels are different tracks.

http://www.kitrae.net/music/Today_L_R_Isolated_Guitar_Tracks_ExcertptB.mp3I have not dug into Zero yet.
December 20, 2009 at 11:09 am #105552visualdistortionMemberOh so awesome! Thanks a lot for this, you make a great job here! You rock
December 25, 2009 at 8:12 am #105682devnulljpParticipantThe octave thing in there on Cherub Rock makes me think there’s a blender thrown into the mix somewhere too. Then there’s the octave down in the solo…?
