Hi!
I was wondering if somebody could help me with this simple problem (as I’m not so experienced):
I bought a (new) Big Muff PI a few months ago and I’m using it with the internal 9V battery.
Now I want to try an external power supply and I know a 9-volt battery eliminator capable of delivering 100 mA of current is suggested.
The questions are:
1)What if I use a 9V power supply delivering more than 100 mA (for instance 200 or 500 mA)?
Could it cause any problem (noise, malfunctioning, speed up the wear and tear of the components, …or even damage)?
2)If I accidentally reverse the polarity for a few seconds, could this mistake damage the Muff?
(the polarity of the small jack should be – tip and + ring, right?)

no problem at all using a higher mA, the rating is a minimum for it to function correctly.
I’m not an expert but using the wrong polarity might damaging something, I think the tip may be positive….I really don’t know I just use these on mine ….. which ever it is these convert it correctly from a ‘boss’ type end.
If you don’t mind me asking, how would you go about reversing the polarity for just a few seconds? Reversing the polarity is not good at all, don’t do it.

Concerning the polarity change, that could have been possible as I ain’t got the original power supply but a multi-voltage/double polarity power supply.
Anyway, as per your advice, I ain’t gonna experiece the wrong polarity on my Big Muff!

Aside from tampering such as attempts at modding or trimpot alignment, the most common way in which my customers have damaged their pedals is through reversed polarity supply voltage or overvoltage. Pedals vary as to their vulnerability, but excessive or reversed polarity supply voltage will damage most, and in some cases damage them beyond repair. Wherever possible, I now design pedal circuitry to be immune to power supply errors.
