Where does this wire end up? It ends up at the top right terminal of the fuzz switch. It shares that terminal with the tan wire that ends up at the bottom terminal of the wah switch, and the blue wire mentioned in Question 2.
Where does this blue wire end up? It ends up at the bottom terminal of the fuzz switch.Question 2:
This black wire where does it go? To the top left terminal of the fuzz switch.
Are they the same? Where does this go? to the switch? Yes, the same. The blue wire runs from the Mode selector to the top right terminal of the fuzz switch, where it shares that terminal with 2 other wires as mentioned in Question 1.
What are hooked up to the switch? Answered above.Question 3
Switch wire, where does this wire go? That’s the tan wire that ends at the top right terminal of the fuzz switch. Again, it shares that terminal with the white and blue wires.April 3, 2009 at 8:27 pm #95217Fender&EHX4everModeratorI made another clip of the non-Muff Fuzz version of the Crying Tone. This one includes some other pedals in combination:

Congrats! Glad I could help.
Yes, the sweep is reversed from wah to volume on both of my Crying Tones, so I think that’s standard.
April 6, 2009 at 11:33 pm #95384BlueSteelParticipanti would love to see an ehx wah sometime in the future.
April 9, 2009 at 2:26 pm #95477WatsonWoodMemberJust did a session over the weekend where I hooked up a Crying Tone with the Metal Muff then the SMM with Hazarei. Awesome! I was able to get sweeping filter effects combined with thumping looped chord patterns followed by screaming solo loops. All this through use of the positioning of the Crying Tone foot pedal which one can use as a sound modeller by moving it through or leaving it in any desired position along its course, as opposed to the classic wah effect use. (I have played with several other wah pedals such as Boss, Morley,Cry Baby Vintage and Cry Baby Dunlop and they are too weak to handle this sort of positioned soundscaping, especially in live conditions). Just needs a little mechanical adjustment on the Crying Tone sometimes to make sure the foot pedal stays in the desired position and does not slip down forwards on account of its weight (!).
Main point…..the marriage between the ’70s Crying Tone and the contemporary Metal Muff and SMMH is perfect! Let us sing “New Crying Tone!” together…July is approaching and still no news of a possible Crying Tone re-issue. Let us hope something wonderful is about to happen……

I have been making minor repairs to an EHX Muff Fuzz Crying Tone that I inherited and I have a few questions if anyone could help me. So far I’ve had to solder one of the mode switch wires back into place and solder the battery ground back onto the inst contact. After that everything worked and sounded clean, but this pedal has been unused for decades and I found that after playing for a few hours the rocker pedal got stuck. It wasn’t that the little plastic gear was misaligned, it was just stuck!- I sprayed a little WD40 and it works fine.. a little TOO well- thus my problem: I am missing one of the pins that holds the rocker pedal in place, making it a little wobbly. In addition, I like to play with the way half cocked, but since I sprayed the WD40 in it, (and possibly due to the wobble from the missing pin) the rocker pedal just slams down every time I try to leave it up. Before it got stuck I could leave it wherever I wanted it, even though the missing pin has always made it a little wobbly.So..
1. What should I use to replace the missing pin on that side?
2. Is there anything i can do to reverse the effects of the WD40 and is the oil making the rocker too loose or is it the pin’s fault? If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it, since this pedal is almost where it needs to be. That and it is my FAVORITE EHX pedal. EHX PLEASE BRING THESE BACK ! ! !
Gracias,

Gracias,
russiloWhat i would do is pull the Rocker of the main part of the pedal and, with a paper towel, dry off the parts you sprayed with WD40. You could probably take the other pin you still have to a hardware store to find a replacement for it, just be careful not to lose it. Also a word to the wise, be very careful when spraying WD40 near or around pots that are not sealed as the solvent in WD40 can dislove and ruin the carbon element inside of it.

Should I be tightening the nut next to the plastic gear? I don’t know what to use.. that thing is THIN.
Also, is there something I can spray that will counteract WD40 to prevent it from damaging any pots? I sprayed only on the nut, but I’m paranoid about it now..What i would do is pull the Rocker of the main part of the pedal and, with a paper towel, dry off the parts you sprayed with WD40. I wouldn’t be worried breaking the nut if it’s loose (unless you’re using a 4ft. wrench lol) but this outfits sells a pot and switch cleaner that also has a lubricant in it which would be good. but if you’ve done any damage to the pot, you woul’ve noticed it by now if you’ve trying operating the pedal. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Supplies:_Cleaners_and_lubricants/DeoxIT_Pot_and_Switch_Cleaner.html

Great pedals, great sounds, a great re-editon if it were to come about.

Got it fixed!
The WD40 made the straight plastic gear (called a rack.. http://www.gearsandstuff.com/images/gear_types/rack.gif ) too slick (maybe corroded since it is plastic). It had to be cleaned thoroughly and then the flat metal guide had to be removed then bent slightly more obtuse then put back into place in order for it to supply enough friction on the rack.
As for the missing pin it looks like a 3/16 rod and a felt washer sufficed after I found a tapered pin with the same dimensions on the fat end would not work.
The rocker now has perfect action and all of the switches and pots are fully functioning.
I love the EHX Muff Fuzz Crying Tone, and it now serves as the lynchpin of my EHX arsenal!August 16, 2009 at 2:07 pm #100630WatsonWoodMemberYes, that is how I fixed the ones on my Crying Tones and Volume Pedals too.
