thanks for explaining exactly what shoegaze is. I had heard of it all over but had no real clue till now.
Really the best pedals for the shoegaze are ones with many different footswitches in awkward positions forcing you to look down a lot when you are onstage!

😆
something like this would be perfect then
That officially sparked my curiosity. What is that?
I would add that these bands have this much in common:
-They either started with CREATION RECORDS, or 4AD in the late 80s
-They have all cited the following as influences: Jesus & Mary Chain, Cocteau Twins, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr.
A few essential shoegaze pedals would include: BOSS PN-2, BOSS HM-2, Vox Wah, and EHX Small Stone
First of all, thanks to everyone for the suggestions/advice. I’ve been checking out the various EH delay pedals, and some of the reviews of the Memory Man w/Hazarai say that it kills tone. Is that true? I’m still trying to decide which one to get – Memory Man, Memory Boy, Memory Toy, etc. I’m also thinking about waiting until the Deluxe Memory Boy comes out next month. Any thoughts?

I’ve heard people say that about the Haz, but I’ve never noticed it myself. I use a lot of vintage pedals, so I don’t even take that stuff into consideration anymore. My solution is the Carl Martin Octaswitch. That saves me the hassle of worrying over signal degradation.

i’ve never noticed any tone issues with the Haz either.
the thing with the Hazarai is, if you’re using it as a mono-in/stereo-out, while the pedal is off it will be passively splitting your signal – that could explain why some people say it kills tone. maybe.
Ahhh, the ‘shoegaze’ sound. Often imitated, but no one really knows what the ‘definitive’ sound is. Personally, I think MBV created the sound with Loveless – probably the most perfect shoegaze album ever.
What I would do, instead of trying to recreate the generic shoegaze sound, is experiment with lots of different sounds. For instance, instead of buying tons of stomp boxes to get the sound I wanted, I went for an Alesis Midiverb Controller which has hundreds of preloaded sounds but which allows you to endlessly edit them to get the sound you want and save them to the unit and call them up whenever you need them using a midi controller. Use this in tandem with a pedal or two and you have a pretty powerful setup.
Also, I just ordered the new ehx Catherdral Reverb Pedal which I must say sounds so sweet that it just might replace all my pedals, and streamline my setup even more.
“Shoegaze” is much more than pitch bending My Bloody Valentine-style noise. Much if it involves ambient effects-laden soundscapes. Modulation, Reverb, Delay and more Reverb. I suppose some would call it dreampop, but there is so much overlap between the two that they almost become interchangeable terms. I tend to think bands like Cocteau Twins and The Chameleons were equally if not more influential to the genre as The Jesus and Mary Chain were. Thus you have bands like Slowdive, Kitchens of Distinction, Lush, Secret Shine, Alison’s Halo, Sianspheric, Air Formation, Tears Run Rings and The Meeting Places with more of an atmospheric sound than MBV, Fleeting Joys, Thrushes, etc…
As to what effects to get, it all depends on the sounds one wants. For me Chorus, Reverb and Delay are essentials followed by other types of modulation (Flanger, Phase, etc..). OD/distortion/fuzz are of least importance to me, but I do use them on occasion. That’s my own preference. There’s no clear standard to follow, no specific brands to get and no set pedal order to lay down. It’s just choosing the effects what work for you and connecting them in ways to get the sounds you want.
