I personally think the Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsies album is the best live album, if not the best album ever, live or not.
What do you guys think?
some of my fav’s are:
The Who – live at leeds
Pink Floyd – Pulse
Meat Puppets – live in Montana
Nirvana – unplugged
Husker Du – The living End
Bob Mould – LiveDog ’98
the woodstock dvd has some great live performances too……Hendrix, Who, Joe Cocker etc.
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Live in Hyde Park. It is amazing!
The only live recordings I’ve ever liked enough to own are Kiss’ Alive! I + II.
Mission of Burma- The Horrible Truth About Mission of Burma
The Who- Live at Leeds
Easily wins. Hands down.

I agree, but then I love The Who.
actually before it was re-issued in it’s full glory, I think I might have dissagreed, I wasn’t so keen on the original ‘chopped to death’ 6 track version.
but this 2 cd version is incredible.
Ignoring whether it’s the “best” — but one live album I’ve always liked is Talking Heads’ “The Name of the Band is Talking Heads” — which is not to be confused with the later (and much more popular) “Stop Making Sense” (which was too slick and polished for me) — the older one also has plenty of cool Adrian Belew stuff.

Oh, and another I’ve always been fond of is Velvet Underground’s “1969:Live (Vols 1 & 2)”
13th Floor Elevators Live
Rolling Stones Get Yer Ya Yas Out
Iggy Pop TV Eye Live
Wire On The Box
Nirvana Unplugged
Ride Live Light
If we included BBC or John Peel sessions, I would have a lot more to add.
Yeah I have “Stop Making Sense”, and the whole thing is disappointing except for “Girlfriend is Better.”
Exit Stage Left by RUSH
oh and ZZ Top’s Fandango
Do bootlegs count?
Tom Waits – Glitter And Doom, 5th July 2008
Tom Waits – Fast Women and Slow Horses, Sydney, Australia
Slipknot – Live 9.0
Deep Purple – Made In Japan
I like King Crimson live stuff a lot…
As for totally genius:
Frank Zappa – Just Another Band From L.A.
Fillmore East
Another great live album is The Mark, Tom, and Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back!) by Blink-182.
