    Hi guys,

I have been going crazy about an issue i’m having with my EH 45000 looper. So i use a midi controller, and a Universal Audio Interface (used with Logic Pro X). I have a 1/4 cable going from the output of the UA interface into the input of the 45000. However, the volume is clipping on the 45000 no matter how low i turn everything down. The only way to get a proper tone is to greatly reduce the volume of the software instruments in Logic, to about 1/4 volume.

The other strange issue is that there is a big loss of quality in the midi sounds when ran through the looper. It’s most noticeable on nice piano software such as keyscape or ravencroft. If i connect monitors or headphone to the UA interface I hear the perfect quality I am going for, but when I run through the looper the quality is lost and it peaks. I It confuses me, because I also have a mic plugged into the UA interface and then ran through the 45000, and the quality of the microphone is perfect – exactly as it would be ran solely through the UA interface. Why is the midi instrument quality being cut in half, and why is the volume clipping and lighting up the LEDs on the 45000?

I’ve tried almost every type of configuration of plugs, lo z to hi z, different impedence/DI boxes, going into the 45000 first, then to the interface, etc. and the very best i can do results in this loss of quality and peaking gain..

How can I play my software instrument sounds from logic using my midi controller, and loop them live using the 45000? The thing that confuses me most is I was actually once able to achieve this, with no loss of audio quality or gain issues a while back, but since have moved and can’t recreate it..

I would be soooo thankful if someone can identify what the issue is, as it’s very frustrating. I try for hours to get it right, and every combo comes up short.

    Thanks,
    Adam

Where do you have the 45000’s INPUT gain knobs set? Do you see the CLIP LED(s) on the 45000 lighting up when the signal clips?

I’m not very familiar with the UA interface but usually audio interfaces have a little setup application running on the Mac where you can set the amplitude range of each output. If the interface has these options set it to the lower amplitude range which would probably be the -4dB setting rather than the +10dB setting.

Hey Flick, thanks for the response. Oddly enough my inputs on both the looper AND the audio interface are all turned all the way down. The only thing that is affecting the volume of the sounds is the volume bar in Logic Pro X, on each software instrument channel.

I think i might have it all plugged in improperly because in the past i had it so that knobs on both the looper and the audio interface were affecting the tracks’ volume. The only thing that I can control with actual knobs is the mic volume (controlled by the input knobs on the audio interface).

I currently have line OUT from interface going into line IN on looper. i tried going OUT from looper, to IN on audio interface but the sound was terrible, muffled and peaking. I also had to go back out from interface, to in on looper to make it work (so like a full circle). Could there be something with the hi z input on the audio interface i should utilizing? or the usb plug on the looper? A DI box? I’m new to this, and can’t find ANY forums about my setup problems :/

Sorry for all the info, this is just really frustrating because i bought all this stuff and can’t just loop like i intended.

Oh, and as for your suggestion, I couldn’t find any db settings in the Universal Audio control panel? My current solution as i mentioned is just to turn the volume bars way down in logic, but the quality of the midi sounds is still greatly reduced when running out to the looper (only software instruments, not mics).

    Thanks again,
    Adam

Honestly i think my problem is just, how can i create a live setup where i am looping the midi instruments from my DAW (played by my midi keyboard)? the 45000 doesn’t have USB connectivity to the computer, so that might be the limitation? I assumed I could create the setup using 1/4 cables.

My audio interface doesn’t have midi.

    Here is the setup.

    midi controller > laptop (usb)
    audio interface > laptop (firewire)
audio interface OUT > looper IN

it works, but the audio quality is greatly compromised. i just can’t understand why.

    Thanks!
