Hi there, I have a friend’s 2001 Deluxe Memory Man that I’m trying to repair, and I’m having a bit of a problem with it. Intermittently, a loud hum will be present in the audio signal. I’ve tried to isolate when this happens, but I can’t find a pattern in the functions of the pedal.
When I took it apart however, I found that when this hum starts, if I wiggle the wires coming from the small transformer it sometimes stops. At first I thought it was simply a ground issue or bad solder joints on the i/o jacks, but this isn’t the case I think. I re-soldered all the joints on the jacks, and the wires that go from the transformer to the PCBeven some of the solder joints on the PCB itself. It looks like the transformer might have already been replaced, since the wires from the transformer to the pcb have been clipped and soldered onto other wires that attach to the PCB.
I’ve checked the switch and everything else, even checking the trimpots, there was the high pitched squeal from the clock ICs but I adjusted those and the squeal is gone. Do you think my problem is in the transformer? And if so, does anyone know the model of the transformer so I could purchase it from Mouser or somewhere? Or would I be better off changing the power supply to a newer supply? I’d rather not do this, just simply replace the transformer for him. There is a sticker on the front/top of the transformer that has the following label:
EI-28-120-21
AEC-0106
I’m assuming that the EI-28 is the size and that 120 is the voltage level? I haven’t messed around with transformers so I’m unfamiliar with the naming conventions.
Check the solder joints on the large electrolytic capacitors. I’ve seen them break and create hum.
The transformer is 28VAC, 100mA or so. This one will work, but I’m betting it’s not the transformer.

Thanks, I just thought about the caps being bad too and I didn’t look too closely at those. That would be an easy fix so I hope that’s it. I’m not around the pedal now or I’d give it a try.
