Home › Forums › Vintage EHX › 18V Electric Mistress unity gain issue a factory standard…? What the..?
I picked up a couple of 1970’s 18V electric mistress flangers, and was surprised that not one but both of them significantly drop the volume of my output when the effect is switched on. Reading through various threads, it seems common practice for users to seek volume drop mods, so it’s evidently not just me being unlucky with both of my units.
I’m pretty surprised they left the EHX factory back in the day with a unity gain issue.
In short: what’s the deal with that..?
That’s just the way things were back then. The Electric Mistress was the lowest priced flanger so people learned to work around any problems it had for the sake of having a flanger.
interesting…. and ironic, given that in 2010, the 18V ehx EM is arguably the best sounding flanger “available”…!
Yep, I have 2 of the 18v units and both have the same volume drop. Since I only use them for home recording, it’s a non-issue for me. They sure do sound beautiful.
If you search electric mistress in youtube you’ll find a video by some british guy who has demoed a lot of vintage EHX pedals where prior to the demo he shows you how to overcome the volume drop. It’s basically installing a capacitor and resistor in parallel with some existing ones on the back of the circuitboard (i.e the side facing you when you open ip the pedal). Looks dead easy if you have some soldering experience.
My original vintage mistress had a huge volume drop, but I’ve recently picked up another on ebay that looks to be a later version – it has a green circuit board and dashes in the circles around the knobs. I also noticed it had a capacitor in parallel off the IC chip in a similar place to where british dude has modded his unit. Will report back if EHX corrected the drop in the later units.
