Hey all, so I just brought home my brand new 12ay7 mic pre, and I’m very excited to play with it. Unfortunately I can’t see to get any sound from it!

    My chain:

AKG C2000B (condenser mic) -> 12AY7 Mic Pre (phantom power engaged) -> Mbox 2 Input 1 Phantom not engaged.

I know the mic works, I’ve just tried it direct using both of the cables i’ve got connected to the mic pre so I know the cables are good, I know the Mbox is good… but I can’t seem to get any signal to pass thru the mic pre!

unfortunately I do not have a dynamic mic at my disposal to check to see if its the phantom power not working on the mic pre, or the mic pre not working at all.

or am I doing something else wrong here? Help! Thanks!

hmmm… I dunno, what I did, but it seems to working now… is it possible the tubes just needed time to warm up? and my 15 or so minutes of trouble shooting was just enough? I guess I should know that tubes need that time, but I feel like it should probably say something in the “instructions” about that!

actually there does seem to be kind of an intermittent problem, but it seems i can fix it by turning off the phantom and then turning it back on… anyone else experience this?

on the MicPre are you using the Xlr out ?

have you tried the microphone in Mbox Input only ?
on the 12ay7 micpre Use the Xlr output to get the tube sound, or use the Jack output to get clean mosfet sound.
On mine there is sound after 30 seconds or such.

what is a battery eliminator ?

The Hum; I had it too and found that it can be two things; first when connecting the micpre to soundcard, you should avoid to act as a ground loop; do not touch both the xlr connector and metal parts on the soundcard when plugging in.

Hum will start when connecting Micpre to sound card, and touching both the xlr/Jack connector and the sound card’s metal parts, by that I am acting as a ground loop.

Hum will start when Overload or over peak happens, in either the sound card or the Micpre I think it is my soundcard but has to test further.

This hum does not happens when I am connecting my behringer mixer, in between the mic pre and the soundcard.

Update. It was my cable. A self made one. I bought a premade one and it worked perfectly. – So much for my soldering skills.
