Before or After is a very interesting question when applying it to the order of FX pedals. This can be a major part of your sound or a major headache.
My answer is to Experiment… There is no “wrong” or “right” way to line up your FX pedals in series, but there are some useful hints that can help you avoid a an audible mess.
Please submit your ideas when hooking up pedals. The more you experiment, the more you can find out about yourself, sonically.
The Soul Preacher has two knobs (volume, sustain) plus a switch to set the attack speed. (fast, med, slow) …. it’s this little switch that made me switch from a dynacomp.
It’s also a little more subtle than a dynacomp and I prefer it for my style of guitar playing, it sounds great playing cleanish rhythm.
there is a massive volume boost on this thing that I could imagine would be great for solo’s and this also means that as you turn the compression up and squish the sound you have plenty of volume to turn it back up to a good overall level.
The only downside is the noise level, it’s a bit hissy…not as bad as a Boss CS-3 but worse than my old dynacomp, I can live with it though because the actual sound of the pedal is exactly what I need in a compressor. it’s the right price, the right size and it sounds great for my style, so I can live with a little hiss.
I’m gonna give it a 8 out of 10.
if it was a little quieter then I wouldn’t be able to fault it for the price and it would get a 10.
because it has such a big volume boost I’m wondering if there is a way to turn the gain of this pedal down a bit, that might eliminate the hiss altogether….off in search of trim pots!!
I completely understand why EHX has reissued their back catalog in the diecast enclosures, but I’m still a huge fan of the oversized bent steel enclosures. I’ve collected most of the old-school pedals, but there are a few that I can’t afford. Those are the ones that I’d like to see reissued, but with modern bonus features:
The one that I kept harping on is an Electro-Harmonix Cassette Tape Delay/Flanger for experimentalists who want to process tape loops, recycle old cassette tapes, and generally make unpredictable noisy mayhem.
I always thought it would be cool to have all the “muff” tones in one box. Like you could switch from the Russian, to a Triangle, etc…a collection of classic muff’s in one box.
and a tuner. ;]
Yeah, I like the Muff idea. Maybe it should be called the “Muff-box” as in “snuff box” because i’m running low on imagination at the moment
I think BYOC do a muff clone which allows you to switch to allow the tone control to work like different muffs and get the same tonal qualities, even though the characteristics of the distortion remain pretty much the same – as far as i know, that is.
yeah, they don’t really sound that different to me. a little more/less gain, a little difference in tone…….I’m pretty sure the BM/tone wicker will be able to get close to many of the original muff sounds.

Both the 16 sec DD and the Lofi Loop Junky arrived this week. I’m in Looper’s Heaven
I’m going to start a 16 sec DD thread as soon as I get a chance to record a soundclip of it. it’s a fantastic pedal, but I want to know more about the mod that EHX can do for it.
wow awesome!
how are you liking them, especially the lofi. I would love to create something on it. How much you get it for? cause they’re bloody expensive.
The Lofi Loop Junky is extremely simple, but brilliant for its simplicity. Like the Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai, it allows you to determine your own loop time without any count in. The 16sDD works more like the BOSS RC20XL – there is a count in, and the loop time is predetermined by setting the tempo and number of measures.
The SMMH and the 16sDD allow you to pile on multiple layers, reverse the loop, speed up the loop, and change the pitch of the loop. The LFLJ does not. However, the LFLJ and the 16sDD allow you to modulate the loop after it is recorded. The SMMH allows you to filter (EQ) the loop after it is recorded.
All 3 of them have their own strengths and weaknesses.
Let’s just say I didn’t pay anywhere near full price for the LFLJ, which is over $300 USD. It was used, but in perfect condition with the original box, cloth wrap, manual, and the power plate. I am quite happy with the purchase.
Great stuff man.
Really want to have a lofi loop junky on my board. Although for now i can slightly recreate its sound with turning the blend, level and chorus/vibrato on my DMM all the way up. All that its missing is the hiss and beautiful noise
Firstly a SMMH needs to get on my board, thus replacing the DL4
Is the 2880 on your wish list or have you grabbed one of those too? ; )
I’ve currently got my pedalboard apart but here is an older photo (not pictured: Mini Green Ringer clone, Fuzz Factory Clone, Boss SD-1 w/clay jones mods, Arion Octave, Boss RV-2, Dano Chicken Salad, Dano Pepperoni)
The miserable thing is that all of my wonderful old stuff is probably long gone (Instant Replay, Space Drum, Domino Theory, Three Phase Liner, and on, and on). Since I grew up with the stuff, it was always “just there” — same goes for Mike, I’m sure he wishes he still had copies of all sorts of things — “you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone.”
When I was in junior high/high school, I used to keep a massive pedal setup — enough that the cumulative noise would start to play itself. In college, I had to downsize, and wound up with my Graphic Fuzz and 16 Second DD — more recently, I really like the Tube Zipper. In fact, working on the new EHX site has got me excited to dig around and try my mothballed pedals again. (I even have some ideas about TOTALLY NEW pedals…
I have to pass off some of my EHX addiction blame to you. Your website has given me the worst G.A.S. over the years, and still does.
BTW, I tried switching out the 4558 op amp in my Mistress, but that didn’t help the volume drop. Is there a different OP amp I should try?
Here’s a portion of my collection. Mainly vintage EH stuff. Not pictured are the amps, guitars, wahs, and rack stuff.
You can see more of my stuff in the articles section of my EH website. See sig for the URL.
