Does EHX like “weird”? I propose: The Mockingbird
This effect will be a delayed single repeat of your input signal with a tone control and light vibrato/chorus/detune. Add a simple fuzz effect, and you’ve got a second voice, mimicking your playing. In effect, it’s a signal double-tracker with mid-focus tone, extended time options, and effects loop.
I’m thinking the controls would be
Level – from negative-infinite dB to matched input to boosted, if you wanted to get real weird;
Time – how long before the duplicate signal is heard, from no delay to, I dunno, 3 seconds? Can be overridden by footswitch controls. Add a 3-way switch for fine tuning – 0-100ms, 100-500ms,and 500-3000ms;
Tone – two controls: first dials in frequency, second adjusts the Q – to give the repeat signal its own voice – add a switch to bypass;
Vibrato – two controls: first adjusts rate, second adjusts depth – switch to turn on/off;
Fuzz – from squeaky clean to pure square-clipped grit.Footswitches would be Bypass, Tap/Hold-Delay, and Fuzz On/Off.
The pedal should also have an effects loop to add external effects exclusively to the duplicate signal. Throw, say, an EHX Attack Decay pedal in the loop and get that reverse tone playing alongside your clean signal, just out of sync. This can make for some trippy spiraling psychedelic tones.
How about instead of tap tempo, you have hold-based timing? Hold the footswitch for however long you want the repeat delayed. Maybe have a buffer memory that will record what you play during this time ready to play when you let off the switch. You could play Queen’s “Bicycle Race”-style to-and-fro guitar line conversations, and begin layering your work a-la a “living” looper pedal. Add an internal dip switch for tails on/off.
For names, I also considered The Tail, The Duplicator, The Shadow, Gemini, The Report, The Retort, Evil Twin, and Mr. Hyde. I decided to go with Mockingbird because the second signal mocks your leading signal.
This is actually an effect I already use on my board, taking five pedals to pull off right: Boss LS2, Behringer Digital Delay, TC Electronic Crescendo, Ibanez AW7, and NUX Mod Core.
I think a set-it-and-forget-it follower signal with its own effects loop could make for some really psychedelic soundscapes. It could also be used for thickening your playing as a live double-tracker. And, most importantly, it would replace five pedals on my board! With all the power supply spots opened up, I could buy more EHX pedals!
