I am attempting to use the Voice Box to plug into a computer for voice modulation without the presence of an instrument. I tried both the 1/4″ and the XLR ports. I am using balanced cables when testing the instrument port, and adapters to convert from 3.5mm to 1/4 to XLR when testing the microphone ports. I am able to get microphone playback from my headset when plugged directly into my computer, but when passing through the voice box there is no playback of my microphone.
I would appreciate any help in this matter. I have a USB Audio Interface if I need to run the voice box through that. My headset is a Steel Series headset for computers and has split 3.5mm jacks for microphone and sound respectively. The sound jack is plugged into a mixer board and works fine, and the microphone jack goes into the voice box.

For example, in the photos you have the Voice Box set to Vocoder; Vocoder mode will not make any sound unless an instrument or sound source is plugged into the INST input jack and a microhpone is plugged into the XLR input MIC IN. Then to hear the vocoder effect, you must speak into the microphone while the instrument sound source is producing a signal.
Based on the photos and your description it sounds like you have only tried either the MIC IN or the INST in but not both together?
On the Voice Box there are two modes where you can just plug in the microphone and hear an effect: OCTAVES and UNISON+WHISTLE modes. You can test the microphone to see if it is working properly through the Voice Box by setting it to either of these modes and speaking through the microphone.
If you are looking for Vocoder effects that do not require an instrument as well, check out our V256. With the V256 you can plug in a mic and create vocoder effects without the need for an instrument.
October 17, 2016 at 1:45 pm #122143pushbyteMemberOkay I have tried setting to both Octaves and Unison+Whistle as you suggested, but no sound is being played back to me when I select to “Listen to this device” from within Windows microphone properties. I have not changed any cables from what is pictured, just the knob.

So disconnect the two XLR plugs currently inserted into the Voice Box and connect these XLR plugs together, the mic signal should now be going straight into the computer.
Also one other note: make sure the LED near the MIC BYPASS footswitch is lit to hear the Voice Box effects. Press the MIC BYPASS footswitch to toggle between effect mode and bypass mode.
October 17, 2016 at 2:27 pm #122145pushbyteMemberOkay I plugged the XLR together and the mic sound is not coming through. If I plug the 3.5mm cable extension from the mic directly into the computer then it works fine. If I plug the mic directly into the XLR without the extension then there is still no sound. So perhaps my XLR converters are not working properly?

EDIT:
My apologies, I had the headset muted. The straight through connection does work properly as expected. Once I plug the voice box back into the setup the mic no longer is working properly.

October 18, 2016 at 1:20 am #122149pushbyteMemberI went through each preset with the mic bypass on and once again with it off. There is no sound coming from the microphone, and I just double checked. Am I to assume at this point that my problem the whole time may have been a faulty switch?

I’m not sure what’s going here. Even if you don’t hear microphone in effect mode it should be audible while in Bypass.
Can you send me the make and model of the headphones?
October 18, 2016 at 1:08 pm #122151pushbyteMemberThe LED is working, but I get no sound on any presets with the LED on or off. I tried with the preset LED on/off through combinations all night too just to make sure it wasn’t that.
Here’s the headset: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B015WKYI50/
If the switch is bad I can return it and get another. Likely refund and get that other one you mentioned. I just don’t want to have to wait another month really is the only issue with that.

Which switch do you suspect is bad?
The user manual for the headphones doesn’t provide too much info. Most likely the problem is that the microphone signal from the headphones is unbalanced but the Voice Box requires a balanced microphone signal into the MIC IN connector. Does your mixer have a balanced send or output of any sort? If it does try plugging the mic into the mixer and then sending its signal on a balanced connection to the Voice Box.
It sounds like the V256 would be a better fit for you but it shares the same mic-pre and XLR output driver circuitry from the Voice Box so if you can’t get the mic working on the Voice Box then it probably won’t work for you on the V256 either.
October 18, 2016 at 2:29 pm #122153pushbyteMemberI am unsure if my mixer will handle that sort of configuration, but I will look into it. I would assume you may be correct about the balanced/unbalanced part as you likely know more than me on this topic and it doesn’t seem like the headset manufacturer really designed the headset to be used in this manner so it would make sense that it is unbalanced.
Let me look into that further. I also have the USB Audio Interface which may work, but I will need to talk to a friend on how to set it up as I’m just a computer programmer and just trying to fumble my way through this audio stuff.

I consulted a professional sound guy and he came to look at my setup after we failed to get it to work through an hour or so on the phone. Upon further inspection he determined that it is an issue where it seems the computer headset microphone requires phantom power, but it is less than 48v. Currently, he is attempting to locate a different headset for me which I can wire into my equipment and then into the computer, but another solution exists by which a circuit can be built to make the necessary conversion. Here is a website which explains in greater detail what part of the problem is, and one solution for building a circuit to address it.

I will post more as we go so others running into the same issue may eventually reach a resolution as well, and hopefully with less experimentation.
November 4, 2016 at 9:44 pm #122213pushbyteMemberOkay I now have a working microphone with XLR connection plugged into the switch. Though neither in Mic Bypass mode or regular does it alter my voice in any way. I have been through each setting for presets down the list with the knobs full left, 50%, and full right. I tried both with the Preset light on and off. I’m not sure what that light means anyways.
At this point I am at a loss. I would appreciate some assistance in getting this working.

Try the following setup:
1. Ensure the LED near the MIC BYPASS footswitch is lit up. This LED toggles on/off each time you press the MIC BYPASS footswitch.
2. Turn the BLEND knob up, or clockwise, to its maximum setting. Doing this ensures that you only hear the vocal effect and not your original vocal.
3. Turn the MODE knob until the LED next to OCTAVES is lit.
4. Turn the VOICE MIX knob fully clockwise so that the effect raises your vocal pitch by one octave.
5. Talk or sing into the microphone, you should now hear the high pitched up octave effect.
6. If you do, turn the HARMONY REVERB knob up to its maximum position, now you should hear reverb on the up octave effect.Let me know if this works.
