Hi. I’ve just got an 8 Step Program and a Zoom G3. I’m hoping to use them to give me some rhythmic tremolo effects by using it to control the input volume on the Zoom. Despite being listed on the Compatibility list on the EHX website I can’t get the 8 Step to work with the G3.

I’ve tried plugging it in with each different depth setting but the Zoom just becomes silent as soon as the 8 Step is connected. If I connect it with depth = 0 then the Zoom works, until I turn up the depth then it just cuts out again.

The 8 Step works fine with a Boss Auto-Wah (AW3) and the Zoom works fine with another expression pedal (a Boss FV500) so they each seem OK alone but won’t play together!

Has anyone had this problem or can anyone offer any advice please? Otherwise one or both of them will have to be returned.

    Thanks

Try this test with the 8 Step and G3:

    1. Connect the 8 Step to the G3 using a TRS cable (one is provided with the 8 Step). Cable should be connected to the EXP/CV OUT on the 8 Step and CONTROL IN on the G3.
    2. Pause the 8 Step and then press the RESET FSW so that LED/slider 1 on the 8 STEP is lit/selected. Ensure DEPTH is the selected encoder mode. Start with DEPTH set to 8.
    3. Ensure you have the G3 set up correctly to use an expression pedal, see page 16 of its manual.
    4. Now move the 8 Step’s step 1 slider while sound is going through the G3. Is their a range for the 8 Step’s slider where it is controlling the G3 as you would expect? If the G3 range less than the full range of the slider then reduce the 8 Step’s depth setting until the slider control’s the G3’s full range. Once you find the correct depth setting, leave DEPTH at that setting and set up a sequence with the rest of the sliders then press the 8 Step’s PLA FSW.
    5. If the above step doesn’t work try changing the TRS cable for a TS cable and repeat the above steps.

Thanks Flick. Still no joy at all with the TRS cable. I do get sound with a TR cable but not control, and the Zoom doesn’t seem to like it anyway (it goes into Tuner mode randomly for some reason).

I’ve given up and returned the Zoom. Have got a Moog MF Boost pedal instead. That one plays nice with the 8 Step and I have an awesome customisible tremolo now :)

Same problem here but with the G5N. I try so many things. Any solution? Thanks.

To be more precise, I’m not sure how to calibrate the pedal with the 8-Step. Do I have to calibrate the 8-step with my G5N? What is the min and the max value to put? The rate? I have ERROR each time. Thanks.

I turn ON my G5N while holding the MENU button. They ask me to enter the min and max value of the pedal and I’m not sure.

    Thanks

As far as I can tell, when the G5N manual describes adjusting and calibrating the “pedal” they are referring to the onboard pedal that the G5N has. The manual makes no mention of how to use the CONTROL IN jack with an external expression pedal.

The G5N manual refers to min and max value, that would equate to the 8 Step’s slider ranges. What you can do is pause the 8 Step then press RESET so the slider 1’s LED is lit. Now push slider 1 down to its lowest or minimum position. This position would be minimum for the G5N or any other device. Once the G5N is happy with the minimum position, push slider 1 to its top-most or maximum position. Allow the G5N to process the max position. Use a TRS cable connected to the 8 Step’s EXP/CV OUT for this procedure.

Thanks for your answer. I try it but I still have the G5N who tell me ERROR when I enter the min and max value. If the G3 is in the compatibility list, I guess someone know how to configure the 2 pedals? My G5N have a Control In plug just like the G3.

I have a led light on my G5N with the mention « pedal ». The LED is alwats OFF. Any link?

And last thing. When I add me 8 Step on the pedal chain (pedal ext), where do I have to place it? In the beginning of the chain pr at the end?

    Thanks again.

Do you have a generic expression pedal you can try to connect to the CONTROL IN jack? It may help to troubleshoot the problem if you can first get the G5N working with a generic external pedal. Once it is working with the generic expression pedal connect the 8 Step to the CONTROL IN jack go from there.

In your case, if the 8 Step is connecting to the G5N, then you probably want to place the 8 Step near the G5N. The 8 Step doesn’t really go in the middle of your pedal chain like other pedals, it is really an accessory for other pedals.
