Home › Forums › Vintage EHX › Please help – Golden Throat II Talkbox issue
Hi,
I got an EHX Golden Throat II talkbox on eBay and I’m having trouble getting it to work. I’ve read some things but what makes my situation possibly different is that 1. I’d like to use it with synths, not guitars, and 2. I’d like to record it, ideally direct into my audio interface, not by miking a speaker. Everything I read says I need a head/cab guitar amplifier type thing, but I don’t have that. Can someone walk me through how I’m supposed to route this so that it works? I’ve tried a few signal paths that sort of make sense to me but it doesn’t work. The talkbox is supposed to be fully functional, but I suppose there’s a chance it’s not.
Please help if you can, it’s so greatly appreciated.
Think of the GT as a speaker cabinet, which is basically what it is. You have to use it in place of an amplifier’s speaker. You can either hook an amp head to it or buy a small combo amp and replace the stock speaker with the GT.
I’d recommend getting a small practice amp like a Peavey to power it. Wattage isn’t an issue since you’ll be using a microphone to get the sound into the PA.
First off thank you for a swift response! So to clarify, I can’t use the vocal amp I have (Roland KC thing) even though it says it has an output jack? I tried this and it didn’t seem to work. I also have a bass guitar amp but I haven’t checked to see if it will work. I’m obviously trying to avoid spending any money if possible and my POS guitar amp doesn’t have an output.
I assume you mean the amp has a line out jack. That won’t provide enough power to drive the GT. The GT has to have a speaker level signal.
Hi The EH Man,
I was able to borrow my friends amp and cab and I figured out how to work it! You were right, that was the problem, I didn’t have anything that would give speaker level signal. So, just wanted to say thanks so much for your help!!
Glad to help. Have fun with your GT!
