I recently changed out my preamp tubes on my Vox Lil’ Night Train with JJ Electronics preamp tubes ECC803S. I had tried these pre amp tubes on my Fender VC before and, they did not have the sound I wanted on it. I feel my VC sounds better with JJ ECC83S instead. It made a great difference on the Vox however. I was curious to try out a variety of different 12AU7/ECC82 power tubes on it. I wound up purchasing four different ones to try out on it. I got the following:
Electro Harmonix 12AU7/ECC82
Tong-Sol 12AU7W/6189
JJ Electronics ECC82
NOS General Electric 12AU7/ECC82
The JJ did not disappoint it sounded very good.
The NOS GE had a very cool woody sound at different settings also good sustain
The Tong-Sol was not bad. Very exceptable tone and balance
The EH is the one I was pleasantly surprised by! I expected it to be the least attractive sounding and, I was completely mistaken. It has great tone, definition, sustain, character. It helped further wake up the amp. A very balanced and punchy sound! I look forward to recording with this soon! Being only a two watt amp, it is ideal to record with! I’m going to run it through an 8 ohm cab which will render a watt and a half.
