I have owned a big muff pi w/tone wicker, handwired tube screamer, and finally an analogman BC 183 sun face (just sold today). i have rid myself of all these because they make my sound smaller. I have a custom built 4watt amp based of a marshall/orange/hiwatt. it has 8 tubes and has a rather large sound and can be quite overdriven on its own. When i add a dirt pedal, i can acquire a sweet tone but the sound comes out sounding noticeably thinner then when it’s off.
The Analogman Sunface sounded the best of them all, great tone when engaged but still the thin sound exists. This occurs with both chords and leads.
Has anyone had this problem? im guessing it has to do with my amp wattage but who knows.
Any suggestions for a dist/OD/fuzz that makes it sound larger?
Organ Eyes.
Have you tried just shoving a boost into it? Something like a Rangemaster or even an LPB-2?
My guess is you’re just getting mush from driving it too hard. What kind of speaker ?
I do have a MXR micro amp, and that works quite well but again it’s not a distortion. I have a weber 200w Thames so there’s lots of room before breakup. I was looking into the divided by 13 dyna ranger, since it has 5 different voicing’s.
