I recently purchased a memory boy from Guitar Center and noticed right away it had a few problems. First off, it would not self oscillate with the feedback cranked. Secondly, i would get a longer delay time IF i had a patch cable plugged into the expression pedal input (i read about this on the ehx forums). I’m fairly certain that with the patch cable in i would get the full 550 ms, as without the patch cable the delay seemed way to short. If someone could send me a soundclip of a single note at exactly 550 ms (using a digital pedal) i could be certain.
I then researched these issues and found that many other users were having the same issues. Flick (ehx staff) posted:
“We are looking into the cause of the problem, there are a couple of things that might cause it.
The DXMB (Deluxe Memory Boy) will definitely not have this problem.”
Well that’s great that the DXMB will be flawless but what about all the poor people who purchased a memory boy?
At this point, i thought well there surely must be a recall of some sort. So i emailed Ehx, thinking they would send me a prepaid box to ship it over in. I got a response saying that they would wave return shipping.
At this point i was getting more and more upset, and i wrote a letter to send in with my pedal. I stated i was disappointed with the quality of this pedal, and that if there was a known issue with the pedal that there should have been a recall. I also stated that i did not think i should be responsible for paying shipping for a pedal i just bought new. I ended by saying i would love to hear from someone on this issue. I sent a copy with my pedal and a separate envelope with a copy of the message addressed to management.
Ten days later, i receive my pedal back with no note. No mention of a reimbursement for shipping in. Great! I plug it in. The self oscillation works. Yay!
The delay- UGH! I still only get maximum with a patch cable plugged in. SO what would you do at this point?EHX staff: Why should i have to pay shipping for a defective pedal?
Why do i have to insert a patch cable into the expression pedal jack to get full delay?
Why would you start working on the deluxe version before addressing the issues with the first one?
What do i do now? Do i send my pedal in again and wait ten more days only to be left disheartened again? I’m so lost at this point!As i said in my letter’s that i sent last tuesday, I love my other Ehx Pedals and always will, but am just so frustrated over this issue! Please, someone get back to me this time!
March 13, 2010 at 12:17 am #108433twisty4678MemberI used an online metronome to calculate my delay time. With the patch cable plugged in, i get 600 ms. With out a patch cable, i get 417 ms.

….could have been solved by just returning it to the shop you bought it from and getting a refund if you felt the pedal was faulty or defective…. Problem solved. I live in the UK so returning something to EHX wouldn’t even be an option really. We get questions like this on here all the time “I bought this pedal yesterday and it’s not working now” … and my answer is always the same which it take it back to where you bought it and get a refund/replacement. Then you can let the shop deal with the returning/getting a refund from EHX issue.
It still baffles me why people don’t do this.
March 13, 2010 at 7:27 am #108446InvaderCCMemberI feel your pain on this ..I’m a huge EHX fan but this memory boy thing is terrible..The first one i had was dead out of the box so i took it back…
The second one would refuse to oscillate on the chorus mode.then would do nothing if you turned up the delay…I took it back..The store was looking at me real cross eyed by this time..
So they give me another one now 37 days after having this one the power supply i believe has gone bad..It went from sounding perfect to acting all funky in a matter of minutes..
It will work fine with a battery for about five minutes then start acting funky again..I have read that a battery is not strong enough to power a memory boy..
So out of curiosity a ran a battery wire adapter to a one spot and it works perfect..So it must be a power supply issue along with the fact battery’s can’t power a memory boy for any length of time..Even Energizers or Duracel..
I love my EHX pedals but why would EHX treat there customers like this on the Memory boy..It is a great sounding pedal but the reliability is worse than a 20 dollar Berhinger pedal..
They even admit to all the problem on the advertisement on the Deluxe memory boy by saying all the problems with the memory boy have been fixed..
What is that?
It feels to me like there saying we know we screwed you on that pedal but if you liked the way it sounded buy this one and it will work were the memory boy was just to wet your appetite..
Please EHX im a huge fan of your pedals but this is wrong..

There’s a couple reasons electro. First, guitar center is about a 30 min drive away from my house, so i’d rather not spend the money on gas. Second, i know for a fact that i purchased the last memory boy in GC. It would take just as long to have them order a new one as to send it in to EHX. Third, i had read about the numerous issues and did not want to risk getting another defective pedal, like invader did.
Invader- that’s exactly how i feel. It’s like we know there are issues so we will make a better pedal! So upset!!!

October 7, 2012 at 5:56 pm #118218octa805MemberI’m with you on this one. Had to pay for shipping both ways on my Memory Boy even though it was under warranty. They fixed it but didn’t leave a note of any kind so I have no clue what was wrong.
Just crapped out again this week, same thing, barely audible volume when effect is on so now I have the option of paying another $24 in shipping roundtrip.
That would be $48 in repairs for a pedal that costs $130ish brand new. that sucks.
I’d love to hear from someone about this on this forum.
