Hey Mr.EHX, you sure have nice pedals in your yard, but the power adapter mayhem you sport is just nonsense. Why do you use those ugly propietary adapters with esoteric voltages…? I guess you don’t live out of selling adapter replacements, do you? Us tone suckers usually have pedalboards to plug in our gigs and unfortunately, we plug ’em ourselves, not some stoned roadie. There are many of your pedals I’d buy right away if just they’d be good ole 9V boss style adapter friendly. I guess I am not alone on this. Am I…? Peace.

November 5, 2009 at 6:41 am #103370Mr.GrimMemberahh ok…like all i use are daisy chain systems for all my 9V’s, except ones that cant because of alternate voltage, like my Holier Grail and PolyChorus, the worst offenders are the dam odd prong ones on all the tube pedals, they could have at least placed it on the top of the units, with the other jacks , its not only irritating because of the diff voltage, but irritating because it gets in the way when you try to place it on a crowded pedal board.

Actually don’t they use 9.6 volts or something odd like that. Usually they aren’t recommended to be daisy chained either.

9v – 9.6v I figured it was pretty much the same thing? they all have ‘9v’ on the pedal itself and I don’t know about in the US but all my EHX pedals that came with a PSU had the same ‘suitable for boss/ibanez’ 9.6v adapter with them. I’ve only ever had a problem chaining the hazarai.

They simply wouldn’t work or sound the same if they would be 9 volts (for example higher voltage means higher headroom so they don’t distort in an ugly way . but there are other reasons for higher voltages too i suspect).

November 5, 2009 at 11:09 am #103383SupremePancakeMemberPersonally I don’t mind the odd voltage such on units like the Flanger Hoax. Makes sense I suppose. Though it is nice that I can daisy chain my XO boxes. I always bring a power strip irregardless.

November 5, 2009 at 12:02 pm #103387perdidoMemberMy pedalboard is getting a bit large. I already got all those you listed, now I want the rest! Ok, no more joking. This is what happened, I ordered 3 pedals: Tube EQ (ok, you win, maybe the tube line has a point…just maybe), Debugger and Micro Pog, none would take the standard juicer. It seems the Micro Pog may get away with it since 9VDC is written on the enclosure, but… now read the product’s literature:
WARNING: Use only the 9.6VDC/200mA AC adapter the Micro POG comes supplied with. Do not use any other AC adapters. Using other AC adapters, even those made by Electro-Harmonix, could cause harm to the unit, the adapter or you. The Micro POG does not use batteries.
This same print is in other pedals that I am not going to list because time is golden. Some even alert about damage to the drummer (mine left the band). If they do work with regular adapters, what is the point of writing those threats and scaring users with possible death caused by their pedals exploding? Inmediatly voiding warranty? I was raised as a catholic and I wouldn’t get over the guilt caused by not following those instructions. Regarding headroom, I have other pedals, like the OKKO Diablo Overdrive, that can work in 9V or 18V just by flicking a tiny switch. And he loves good ole adapters, indeed.November 5, 2009 at 1:04 pm #103389WatsonWoodMemberThe Warning notice is obviously for insurance reasons, just like a coffee vending machine informing us that hot coffee is …hot.
Using a 12 volt adapter on a 9 volt adapter input is also like plugging 230 volts into a 110 volt amp or television. Common sense should tell us that even if it works for a nano-second or so, sooner or later something might well go wrong (or right depending on one’s destructive instinct).
EHX pedals use different voltages for different circuits and different pedal types (vintage, XO, Nano etc) for musical and creative reasons.
All guitar amps are not 40W and all guitars are not Fenders nor all mikes Shure mikes. Thank heaven.
(For the record I do have and adore one of all the above articles).
If one can only deal with the regular 9 volt adapters the obvious solution is to stay with 9 volt type pedals. A decision I myself made for a reduced pedal board a couple of times when playing a series of gigs.
If EHX has always strongly supported one thing it is non-conformity in sound, experimentation, enclosure shape, effect range, and, logically, adapters.
I do occasionally start beefing when I have to get two 9 volt batteries to feed my vintage Electric Mistress but I stop as soon as I plug in and enjoy the sound. -
