Hi,
I just bought a new polychorus pedal and it seems cool, but if i turn some of the knobs up past halfway (feedback or delay/tune) there’s this weird resonant squeakiness that appears in the upper half of the modulation sweep…it doesn’t sound like part of the effect, more like there’s something wrong with the pedal.I ve tried different gtrs/leads/amps etc and the sound is still there. Its a really annoying high pitch squeak that i never noticed before when i used my friends polychorus. I dont have any other pedals in the chain or sharing the same power source.
anybody else experience this?
November 5, 2009 at 6:14 am #103364Mr.GrimMemberi think what your hearing is “self osculation”. many effects can do it, and sum people use it intentionally. its when the pedals controls are pushed beyond there use (even tho the controls were built to do that) and the unit begins to generate a noise of its own, without an input signal.
a good example of an artist using this “noise” or “self osculation” is in NIRVANA’s intro to “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter” and Curt actually used the same pedal a Poly Chorus, which i myself had stumbled upon as well by mistake one day.
unplug your input cable to the unit, and crank the controls like you had experienced the previous issue, and c if its still there without your guitar, if so what i mentioned above may be the case, if not maybe sum thing is wrong.
November 5, 2009 at 8:58 am #103376choiceParticipantHi thanks for replying to me. I don’t think it’s this. The noise is at a much higher freq. It only happens when I play a note on the guitar whilst it s plugged into the pedal and it’s switched on. It sort of reminds me of the freq a television omits when it’s switched on. If that makes any sense.
November 5, 2009 at 11:37 am #103386Fender&EHX4everModeratorSounds like it needs a trimpot alignment.
November 5, 2009 at 6:10 pm #103412Mr.GrimMembero ok, then Fender&EHX4ever;may be correct, and/or there definitely is sum thing els wrong with your unit.
November 6, 2009 at 12:12 am #103428choiceParticipantYeah im sending it back tomorrow. V. Disappointed as i will have to wait a week or 2 before my new one arrives. Cant wait. I ve been dying to get one of these for over a year.
I uploaded a little 50 sec. MP3 of the problem i was having just to show anyone who might be having (or have in the future) the same problem. The MP3 encoding makes it hard to hear, but if you listen to the last 15 seconds you can hear a high freq. ‘metallic whistle noise’ along with the note im plucking.Click here to listen to polychorus test_07.mp3
Thanks for your suggestions.
November 6, 2009 at 5:25 am #103438Mr.GrimMemberyeah just listened to it, thats not normal, good luck on your return.
March 12, 2011 at 7:58 am #114623hundirlaflotaMemberHi,
this post is very old,
anyway because it could help somebody,
I’ll tell you that I had the same problem recently with my Polychorus,
just when I was going to send it to the technician,
I tried it by itself, out of the pedal chain, and the high frequency squeak had dissapeared,
the guilty of the noise was an Artec Tuner Pedal that went away and no squeak since then.
Best Regards
PabloJune 6, 2011 at 9:54 pm #115512RococoMemberHi,
I have the same problem with my Polychorus, even when it is the only pedal in the chain.
I have just written EHX about it.Other guys have been complaining about this matter in this topic : https://www.ehx.com/forums/viewthread/731/
No news from EHX guys…I’ll keep you posted!
June 6, 2011 at 10:31 pm #115498ehxguy11MemberI had the same issue. I actually had true bypass installed and it still had the strange high frequency. I think that it has something to do with the power supply. I ended up selling it because I couldn’t deal with the noise. I hope EHX fix it and release a XO version.
June 7, 2011 at 6:29 am #115501RococoMemberThanks for the info mate. Still waiting for the answer from EHX…
June 7, 2011 at 6:34 am #115502hundirlaflotaMemberHi,
I guess this pedal is not being properly adjusted in the factory, (usually delay chips are noisy when they deliver more delay time than they’re supposed to, as it happens in cheap analog delay units ie Daphon),anyway it sounds nice if you don’t push the feedback or delay pots too far (pity!),
I wasn’t sure about selling mine or tempering with inside trimpots, finally I did second thing, wich we’re not suposed to do because you can damage the pedal,
but in my case it went well, now I’m happy with my Poly, a bit of noise in extreme settings but nothing I can’t live with.
Cheers
June 7, 2011 at 7:57 am #115503RococoMemberHi gestaltito,
Thanks for the advice man!
I began tweaking the internal trimpots yesterday night, and after moving three of them I finally got rid of the noise… But now I only have the flanger position working. The filter, chorus, and delay have almost no incidence on the signal except some saturation.
With 7 trimpots inside the polychorus, there’s a great deal of possibilities before finding the good setting that will work with every effect.Any chance you could take a gutshot of your reissue Polychorus?
That’d be a priceless info for all people having trouble with this bloody noise…June 7, 2011 at 10:13 am #115489ehxguy11MemberI wouldn’t go messing around with the trim-pots, you can break it pretty easily if you don’t know what you are doing.
