I love the sound, I took achance and bought 2 of them before trying them. They sound great. Only there is a ridiculous volume boost when they are engaged. They simply aren’t usable the way they are right now. I’m hoping someone has answers. Is there a gain trim inside?

I’m also hoping for an answer to this, soon too or mine is going back.I just got it today & noticed a big volume boost. This screws with my whole setup because my main amp has no FX loop & since it also has no master volume everything is based around gain staging in my chain (cln/dist etc..).Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

i dont know anything about the insides of this pedal, but when i have a volume cut with a pedal i use an lpb-1 booster every time with the problem pedal, and with a pedal with a volume boost i would use a volume attenuator with the pedal, and use sum type of switching pedal like the switchblade or a bypass loop pedal so you can turn on both pedals at once!

i sell a volume pedal (w/ optional optical control) and a true bypass looper (w/ feedback option), but you could easily make one yourself as well!

Thanx but I’ll probably just return it & get something else.If the pedal is incapable of unity gain & don’t have an adjustment then I’d rather just not use it.Last thing I need is an extra pedal in my chain for each pedal I have to compensate for.

It’s to compensate for the EHX pedals that have a volume drop. ;)

    Hi,

I also suffer from the volume boost that is there no matter what I set the blend to.

I see there are 3 trimpots inside the Memory Toy. One is for the Modulation Depth. Could one of those others be for gain?

If not, can i return the unit and get a replacement hoping that one won’t have the boost?

    Thanks,

    Ronald

This is the reply i got from EHX when I asked about the volume issue.I ended up returning mine:

“Hello. Unfortunately that is normal for this unit and there is no trim pot adjustment to lower the gain.
    Regards,”

Thanks for the information. Did you get a replacement that did work?

    Yeah…but it wasn’t a EHX pedal.

FYI I mailed EHX support and recieved the following reply:

    “Hello.
The volume boost is normal. We set it up so that when BLEND is set to 50%, there is no volume boost. As you turn Blend the volume changes, this is normal for a wet/dry control.
All the units are the same in that regard.

    New Sensor”

I need to doublecheck if this is indeed the case (no volume change at 50% setting).

I can’t seem to find a ‘good’ unity setting. Yes; with the blend knob at 12 o’clock the dry signal at unity BUT the repeats are very loud (as loud if not LOUDER than dry signal). All the way counter-clockwise basically turns the pedal into a boost. These observations hold true no matter what position the mod switch is in.

I don’t really mind, I guess; but I probably wouldn’t have bought it if I had known. It was a really tough choice between it and the MXR Carbon Copy. Who knows; the CC may have done the same thing lol.

It’s not really a pedalboard killer, just a minor annoyance; especially since you can’t fix it lol.

EDIT: I have noticed that the pedal becomes obnoxiously loud when on if there’s a fuzz or distortion in front of it that’s on. For example, the Big Muff Pi makes the Memory Toy sound like shit; the Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe – not bad (still a little louder, but very nice overall).

I got used to the volume change when engaged. Some other pedals like a tremolo might weaken the signal a bit, this pedal boosts it, it’s all good.

What matters is that this pedal has been on my board all the time since I bought it (more than 3 years now), I basically have it engaged all the time with the blend low (9 o’ clock) for certain songs. The atmosphere it creates is very convincing.

    Way to go, EHX!

Yea I suppose it’s a lost cause trying to make everything perfect and unity in the analog world. It kind of works nicely as a little boost when I go into a nice Petrucci-like neck pickup solo; just kick in the delay and it also boosts my signal. Perfect. It’s just annoying when I’m playing quietly at night and the boost startles me lol.
