To my horror I still see people suggesting using a flathead screwdriver to get knobs off the EH or other pedals, that is just an accident waiting to happen and applies very wrong pressure to the pot shaft! So here’s my safe way:
Things:
– Flat shoelace (like the ones in skate-shoes, round ones will do for the tube pedals, but flats for the others).
– Pedal with a knob to remove
Steps:
1. Slide the shoelace under the knob right up to the pot shaft. leave enough spare on each side to pull on.
2. Slide one side of the lace a bit past the pot zo it doesn’t shoot out when you pull
3. Hold down the pedal with your foot and gently pull (evenly!) on both sides of the shoelace to pop off the knob You can stick out one thumb to hold the knob so it doesn’t shoot into your face.
Warning: Gently!! Or you’ll be known as EHX-Eye for the rest of your life!
There will be other techniques, but use a little sense and not a screwdriver!
screwdriver works for me by gently pressing it up from all sides and then pulling it off by hand
Well yeah, still you’re pushing down on the pedal with the screwdriver (the sheet metal cases could be dented with that).
As long as you be gentle it’s okay I guess, but there are so many people who just jam a screwdriver under there and rip the knob off. *shudder*
My way sounds very extreme, but actually I just step on the pedal with my shoe on and take the knobs off haha. (I’ve been modding around with my BMP, requiring me to take off the knobs a few times).
is there a minimum of owned EHX pedals to become an admin? :poke:
Yes, it’s been awhile, but IIRC Scott’s minimum requirements were:
5 vintage units
3 tube models
3 XO models
2 Big Muff Pis
3 Deluxe Memory Man units
2 Small Stone units
2 Electric Mistress Units
1 vintage 9v battery
3 pieces of swag
2 vintage catalogs
and the letters EHX tattooed across your forehead :metal:
It was a tough initiation period, but it was well worth it!

Pics or GTFO!! 😆
Well .. I score well on requirement number 2 .. period!
I guess I’ll have to drop out and start working my ass off immediatly! 😆
I’ve never had to take the knobs off my pedals, but if i ever need to, i’ll try the shoelace idea. i would never want to dent my pedals. scratches i’m okay with, but huge dents, definitely not

I’m okay with scratches .. but when a pedal is new I work hard to keep it scratch-free for as long as possible.. When it than inevitably does get scratched, I feel all empty and sad.
And a week later the pedal scratched into oblivion!
