please. It maketh so much more convenient, to follow a thread.
January 11, 2009 at 7:27 pm #90445BlueSteelParticipantWell isn’t that sort of why there is the “latest post” thing next to the forums and the topics?
January 11, 2009 at 10:07 pm #90454Ned FlandersModeratorI get emails about all the latest threads, you can set your account to notify you of this in the user control section.
January 11, 2009 at 10:56 pm #90464McHavenModeratorI don’t want emails about every post. Right now, I get emails about new threads in forums I moderate, and that’s enough for me. I am a strong supporter of the “go to newest unread post” idea though.
The blue/grey icons are fine, but if you’re like me, you don’t want to miss a thing. So, even if I click on the latest post on the right, I may not have seen all the posts before that that I’ve missed. Then I have to open up the sub-forum, and go and open all those threads and then repeat until I’ve read the entire forum.
Maybe I’m just a whiner, but I strongly agree with the idea to implement this. It’d make it a lot easier for some of us to be able to see all the information being posted.

I do want an easy way to pick up where I left off. This isn’t about coming up with workarounds; these are things which should be present in order to have a streamlined site that isn’t a headache to use.
January 12, 2009 at 11:44 pm #90572electro-melxModeratorcan you link me to a forum that has this feature so I can understand exactly what you are suggesting?
It may or may not be possible, but if I can see how it works I will make sure it is brought to the attention of Scott, who will then see if it’s possible and if seems a good/practical idea to add the feature to the forum.

I think I understand the request — that you can jump to the oldest post within a thread that came after your last visit — a somewhat more complicated implementation would be to track each thread you’ve viewed independently (though I doubt many forums behave that way b/c of the overhead).
But basically I’m at the mercy of the features of this particular forum — we can sometimes justify custom coding, but not always — and I think this forum’s default behavior is to jump you to the “most recent” post, and I don’t think that there’s a built-in mechanism to jump to the “oldest post since my last visit” — but I’ll ask the next time I’m chatting with the devs…

Let’s see… Muse.mu boards, talkbass, harmony central, and ubuntu, which is pretty much every other forum I’ve ever used.
January 13, 2009 at 9:03 am #90607electro-melxModeratorThey have it on HC? I didn’t know that!! I guess I just don’t read forums in the same way.
January 13, 2009 at 9:22 am #90613McHavenModeratorNot exactly the same, but a similiar idea is to use the RSS feeds, which I just noticed we had.
