Greetings,
We always talk about the great pedals this fine company manufactures, but we haven’t discussed the heart of many great a amps, the tubes or valves, for our English folks.
I have a collection of vintage tube amps. Most of them have been re-tubed by Electro Harmonix EL34’s, EL84’s and some 6L6’s and of course, pre-amp tubes. I have to tell you that these are great tubes. I haven’t had any of these amps re-tubed since 2002. That’s 6 years…. Not all of them have been used religiously, but they have had some serious burn in time. They still sound great.
What are your experiences with Electro Harmonix tubes?
November 21, 2008 at 9:17 pm #87587tubezipperModeratorI have yet to acquire a tube amp, but when it comes down to re tubbing an amp of mine, i’m sure i shall use EH Tubes
November 21, 2008 at 9:24 pm #87588FUZZ (EHX Staff)MemberI have never used any EHX pedals into a solid state amp. I have one, but never tried it with this stuff. Interesting…..
November 21, 2008 at 10:05 pm #87591Fender&EHX4everModeratorI use Electro-Harmonix Tubes in my 3 Fender amps. I’m not a tube connoisseur, but I know that they sound great to me.
November 21, 2008 at 10:33 pm #87592tubezipperModeratorI was amazed at how good my Big Muff sounds through my solid state 70’s yamaha.
It’s awesome!!
I was warned once to not use a big muff unless it’s through a tube amp. My amp handles it very very well :metal:

nah, that’s BS…..fuzz pedals sound great into SS amps anyone who tells you differently is a fool.

November 24, 2008 at 1:23 pm #87618FUZZ (EHX Staff)MemberA fuzzbox (or fuzz box) is a type of effects pedal comprising an amplifier and a clipping circuit, which generates a distorted version of the input signal. As opposed to other distortion guitar effects pedals, a fuzzbox boosts and clips the signal sufficiently to turn a standard sine wave input into a waveform that is much closer to a square wave output. The sound of almost creating a square wave gives a “Rough around the edges” effect that creates the classic fuzz tone. This gives a much more distorted and synthetic sound than a standard distortion or overdrive. Fuzz sounds also tend to have lower Mid frequencies than other distortion types. The term “fuzz box” is often used generically to refer to any effect pedal that produces a distorted sound.
As clipping is a non-linear process, intermodulation will occur, leading to the generation of an output signal rich in extra harmonics of the input signal. Intermodulation distortion also produces frequency components at the various sums and differences of the frequency components of the input signal. In general, these components will be not be harmonically related to the input signal, leading to dissonance. To reduce unwanted dissonance, simple power chords (root, fifth, and octave) are often used when using fuzzboxes, rather than triads (root, third, and fifth) or four-note chords (root, third, fifth, and seventh).

November 25, 2008 at 12:09 am #87660julianModeratorI’ve used Sovtek 6l6s and EHX 12ax7s, but my experience with tubes is so lacking (I’ve had a tube amp for 2 years and I’ve gone through 3 sets of power tubes, 3 preamp tubes, and 2 phase inverter tubes.)
December 2, 2008 at 5:07 pm #87977chisaParticipanti have used EH valves in the pre of my marshall and i find them a bit fizzy and not very warm compared to the jan/philips i also use.
haven;t tried the power vlaves yet.
December 2, 2008 at 5:13 pm #87983FUZZ (EHX Staff)MemberTubes are finicky like that. It all depends on the model of 12AX7’s and the geometry of the plates to deliver the right balance of electrons to produce the sound you want. It’s all trial and error for finding your own tone and style for that matter.
December 2, 2008 at 5:15 pm #87984chisaParticipantas for the tubes do they and sovtek come out of the same factory?
December 2, 2008 at 5:24 pm #87985FUZZ (EHX Staff)MemberYou know your valves…. Yes, they come out of the same factory but are completly different. They have their own formula and design to keep them separate.

there wouldn’t be many new valves around without the new sensor factory.
