I have the Mel 9 Tape Replay Machine. I had it connected toward the beginning of a chain of 7 pedals. The day before yesterday, there was no problem. However, yesterday, I suddenly got no sound when the pedal was switched on, while the bypass still worked correctly. It worked correctly when I attached the guitar to the input and the amp to the output. It also worked correctly when I removed most of the other pedals from the chain.
What could be the problem here? My guess is that it could have something to do with impedance, but that wouldn’t explain why it worked before.
It’s still under warranty. Should I exchange it?
Thanks.

This sounds close to my experience. I too have the Mel9, worked fine and consistent for some time, then one day a similar scenario hit where it wouldn’t kick in despite ‘lights on’…note this was the only pedal between guitar and amp. I found a few notes suggesting disconnecting the power supply connector from the pedal, re-connect and sure enough the pedal was enabled, worked fine.
Not an ideal workaround, but when I hit this issue, these steps seem to be consistent.
Replacing a good idea, but since there are notes out there for this issue, doesn’t guarantee it won’t happen on a replacement. I had reached out to EHX but unfortunately, no response.
Hope this helps and good luck!

I spoke with someone from the dealer where I bought the pedal and discussed various possibilities and things I should test. He said that they would take it back and send it to a service center in Germany (where I live), but if the pedal works by itself, they would probably say nothing’s wrong and send it back.
I find that there’s no reason to use most other effects pedals in combination with this one, so I generally just use it with the EHX Freeze sustaining pedal and a compressor. I can live with switching cables, although it would be inconvenient. What I’m most concerned about is the possibility that the pedal could just stop working entirely. I read a review from somebody who said that this happened with his EHX Ravish Sitar pedal. I would guess that the circuitry inside it is digital so that if some chip or other can’t be replaced, once it’s out of warranty, it will just be non-functional and I’ll have no recourse.
February 22, 2022 at 1:06 pm #187138EHX STAFFKeymasterFirst what power supply are you using?
Cheap dasiy chain supplies dont cut it.
Some supplys have a slow ramp up and stall the MEL9.
Others do not have enough current to supply what the pedal needs.
have you tried the EHX supply?February 22, 2022 at 1:08 pm #187139EHX STAFFKeymasterThe techs can always be reached at info@ehx.com
February 22, 2022 at 2:04 pm #187143LFinstonParticipantI’m using one of the 9V power supplies that came with the various EHX pedals that I’ve bought. Since they’re identical, I didn’t keep track of which power supply came with which pedal. While I have other 9V power supplies that I bought for use with pedals made by other manufacturers, I only use the EHX power supplies with the EHX pedals, although there doesn’t seem to be any particular reason why the others wouldn’t work. Since I already have so many power supplies, I use one for each pedal and not the kind that can power multiple pedals.
Thank you for the email address, which I will use, if needed.

To add to LFinston’s thread where I responded my experience, when my issue came, I was using the power supply that came with the EHX Mel9. Just to add, this situation doesn’t always occur when using Mel9.
Lastly, thank you EHX, as well, for providing the email address for EHX support…I can’t recall how i attempted contacting as it’s been some time now.
Cheers and good luck, LFinston.
