Hey everyone. So I just bought a “mint condition” EHX Silencer noise gate that came with the bix, manual registration etc. and it looks mint as well. The problem is I feel like its behaving very strangely and I dont know if this is normal, or if I have a defective pedal. I have carefully dialed in all of the knobs and when it does work, it works great. Here is a list of strange things it does:
-When I forst turn on my amp, pedals and guitar including the NG(Ill be referring to the noise gate pedal as NG from here on), it doesnt do any kind of filtering or gating at all. I have to then tturn the pedal off and back on for it to work. I have to do this every time I stop playing and turn my guitar off
-I used to be able to switch from my bridge pickup to my neck pickup with the volume almost all the way down, to get a nice vlean sound even when my way huge fat dandwich distortion was on. This way I could switch between clean and distorted by just flipping the pup selector switch. This is important to ke because I have a prosthetic left leg. NOW the noise gate cuts out most of the clean sound so I have to turn the volume pot way up which basically uses too kuch of the distortion pedal. I used to be able to hear my guitar when set up like this with the volume pot set at 2. Now it has to be set higher and higher for the same effect depending on whether or not I used the distortion at full volume on the other pickup before or after.
-I feel the need to explain that last part better. I have an Epi Les Paul with dual humbuckes and a 3 way switch. I also have a fake leg and cant tap dance on my pedals. So to go from distorted to clean I use the pyps, pots and switch on my LP. So at first I can get a clean and soft clean sound with the distortion on simply by rolling off the volume pot and setting it to a 2 or 3.The silencer noise gate is on all the while. Then I flip my switch and change to the other pickup which has its volume set to 10 the entire time. This way I dont have to risk falling over by stomping on pedals and balancing on a fake leg. Everything is still all good at this point. NOW when I have to switch back to the clean pickup with the volume set to 3…nothing happens. The noise gate now isnt registering this pickup. So I have to turn the volume pot way up and by then, its no longer a clean tone because Im using distortion with the volume pot set to 7 or 8. Does that make sense now?
So I might be asking a lot but some of the things this pedal does just doesnt make sense. My bandmate agrees with me. Is this normal or did I buy a “mint condition” turd? Thanks in advance.

A traditional noise gate like this operates its gate according to the input level you feed it.
As the input signal fades or is reduced below a level you set it at it throws the gate up and mutes any noise or sound .
For it to operate properly it needs a consistent input level.
When you turn down your guitar volume you are lowering the input to the gate trigger and the gate thinks the signal is fading and it does its job.
So I am sorry to report this gate will not work for what you want to do.December 28, 2016 at 9:40 pm #122406Jackstand JohnnyMemberThats what I figured is going on. I thought my cleaner tones were at the same volume as my dostortion but Ill have to keep messing with it. Im waiting on my bandmate to buy my Tele so I can get a looper switch. This will make it easier to use my co pressor with my clean tone to help amplify it and make switching much easier to where I wont have to use the guitar pots to go from clean to disortion with the distortion pedal on the entire time. Thank you for the info!
