I have a Disaster Area Designs SMARTClock Gen3 that I’m using to set the tempo of my 45000. So far in both Ext Clock modes, the Record button flashes rapidly and does not allow me to record anything. I understand that using Ext Clock requires a Start Command from an external source like a Drum Machine. Since I’m not using a drum machine, how do I start recording? I’ve used Google and searched so many forums and read and re-read the manual. Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

It sounds like if the Gen3 does not output a MIDI Start command then it’s not compatible with the 45000. The 45000 requires the MIDI Start command to record and playback when synchronized to MIDI Clock. Without the MIDI Start command the 45000 does not know where it is in relation to the MIDI Clock master.

Thank you for the reply. Correct, the SMARTClock only sends bpm info. Is there a workaround to use the 45000 as a live looper with full band to a global master click track and live tracks? I want the live loops to lock in place for every measure. Also, the manual doesn’t specify, but is there a midi command I could use to simulate a start command to begin recording? I could just use a midi controller like RJM Mastermind to send BPM info and a start command.

If the RJM Mastermind sends the MIDI Start command along with MIDI Clock then yes, it would be a good fit for the 45000.

There really isn’t a workaround for the MIDI Start command. The 45000 needs to receive the Start command.

One thing you can do is set up the loop lengths ahead of time without MIDI Clock. If you know you will need a loop that is 4 bars long, you could create a silent loop that is exactly four bars (do this with Quantize enabled). Make the loop while EXT. CLOCK is off on the 45000. Then when ready to sync to the master clock, enable EXT. CLOCK on the 45000 and press PLAY on the master device. If it sends MIDI Start the 45000 will start playing back the silent loop, you can begin recording on it by pressing the REC button, whenever you like.

The RJM can send all sorts of commands. I’ve seen a post somewhere where someone uses SYSEX message for Start and Stop commands for a Beat Buddy. Will the same command work for a 45000 or does anyone know the correct message for 45000? Are Start and Stop commands universal or product specific? A drum machine is sending some sort of message to the 45000. My question is, what is that message?

Again, I really appreciate all the help and advice any one can give me.

These SYSEX transport messages are MMC messages (Midi Machine Control), to start, stop, pause, record etc. These are different messages than program change or control change.

    This might help:

MIDI Start and Stop commands are universal. They are not product specific and they are not SYSEX commands. MIDI Start and Stop commands are System Real-Time messages, as is MIDI Clock. They work with MIDI Clock to synchronize MIDI devices to each other.

Is there a specific RJM Mastermind model you’re interested in? We can look up its MIDI spec in it manual.

I have the RJM Mastermind (discontinued version) and the newer RJM Mastermind PBC.

On Page 54 of the RJM Mastermind PBC 10 manual it says that you can optionally enable MIDI Start and Stop messages. The PBC will send out a MIDI Start message when you start sending MIDI Clock and will send a MIDI Stop message when you stop sending MIDI clock. MIDI Start/Stop will need to be enabled for on the Mastermind to work properly with the 45000.

Very cool. I’ll look in to this. Thanks!
