Hey guys, this is my first EHX pedal and thought I’d see if anyone has pointers. I got the Hot Wax new at the end of September and it’s been great. for some reason, I’m now getting an issue where after a few minutes of play the volume starts to fade, not quite to silence, but to a quieter, buzzier sound. This seems to happen in particular when I have both sides of the pedal active, but as soon as I disengage the pedal I’m back to full volume, so it doesn’t seem to be any other link the chain I’m plugged in to the included power supply.

Any ideas on the cause and whether it’s a simple adjustment to make or a faulty component?

I thought I had it figured out, but no such luck. The Hot tubes side by itself is doing fine, but the Crayon side seems to be the culprit. It’s going out mid song constantly. I have relatively low output Mojotone 59 clone pickups in this guitar, so it doesn’t seem like I should be causing some kind of clipping, but I’m no tech guru. In hindsight, this happened to me during a show not too long ago as well, but it wasn’t obvious at the time that this is what had happened. So I don’t think the pickup change is to blame either way.

I’ve just started having exactly the same problem. Did you manage to solve it at all?

Possibly, but it may be too early to be sure. In my case, I was running off a SHURE GLXD-D6 wireless. It just “feels” like my Hot Wax is getting overloaded, which may or may not be in any way accurate. But with that in mind, I turned the output gain from my wireless down from 0 to like -5 dB. I have not had the sound cut out a single time yet since I did that. I had emailed info@ehx.com and got a quick reply with their willingness to repair and several questions from a product engineer. I am holding off for now though while I give it some more play testing.

I think there could also be a pedal order component to this. I’m kind of new to putting together pedal boards, so I haven’t paid much attention to impedances and things, and it looks to me like the Hot wax has input and output impedances (220 ohm in, 2.2M Ohm out) that are kind of unusual. I’m not knowledgeable enough to know exactly how that plays into this, but I suspect there’s something to it. I’m still working up this angle though.

    **Update**

I have not had any problems at all since tweaking my pedal order (I got rid of Wampler Pinnacle Deluxe that I had in front of the Hot Wax) and adding a buffer at the start of my chain. so hard to exactly what the cause was, but it seems to be with the interplay with other pedals.

I’m pretty new to pedal boards as well but it sounds like we have the same problem. I get what youre saying about it being overloaded tat what mine feels like too. thanks

    Hi,
Got my Hot Wax less than a month ago and I am having the same issues, but only with humbuckers. If i play a single-coil guitar, I dont have this problem. How did you fixed it? What can I do? This happens when the pedal is in a pedal chain and when it is used alone. Also, the problem appears when both effects are engaged and when the crayon side is engaged. Please let me know what can I do.
    Thanks!

On second thought, the other thing I did was lower the output setting of my wireless unit. Perhaps that was the more impactful adjustment. If you are running a wireless with that otion, give it a try. Otherwise, maybe see if a pickup height adjustment helps. I have had another distortion pedal that was sensitive to that as well.

    Hi

I also have a similar issue with my Hot Wax I just got it yesterday and after playing a few minutes it started to sound very bad like a noise gate and I noticed that the issue only is by hot tube side. the crayon sounds little better but it lost volume and sounds very bad if I enabled the both effects.

I got my Hot Wax about a month ago and hadn’t noticed a problem but didn’t actually use it for extended periods but today I was just playing and couldn’t stop because I was enjoying it so much and suddenly all I heard from my guitar was a muffled sound. I sometimes have a problem with a coil tap switch (a guitar I made myself so I can’t blame anybody else) so I flicked that a few times but it didn’t help so I went through all my pickups but I couldn’t get anything but a flat sounding clean tone.

I was using both Hot Wax and Crayon so it was very noticeable when it stopped and my attention went straight to the pedal. I switched each off individually by the foot switch but it didn’t help. I then disconnected the power and reconnected and everything was at full double overdrive again.

I was playing along with a drum track on my Zoom R24 so I just happened to see the time when it happened, about 7m 30s.

Is there a known fix for this yet?
