    Hi,

I picked up a v256 recently, mainly to use for vocoding with synth patches. For the most part I’m very impressed with the high bandwidth vocal reproduction. But one problem I’m having is that even with no mic signal, or (even a mic cable plugged in for that matter) I’m hearing noticeable bleed through of the carrier signal from the balanced output. The hotter the signal, the more bleed. I can reduce it significantly by lowering the synth output but then the vocoder signal is so weak that it requires a lot of trim from my mixer, which then adds noise and brings back the carrier signal bleed.

Oddly, if I set the unbalanced output to 100% effect, then that output has none of the bleed through. It’s kind of the opposite of what I’d expect. The bleed on XLR out is not related to whether anything is plugged into the unbalanced out or whether a mic is plugged in and silent, or not plugged in at all. I have the pitch knob at 100% so it is not the internal synth I’m hearing, and I can confirm that by turning my the synth volume to zero. The bleed stops entirely then.

I realize this isn’t a $1000 box, but I’m wondering if it’s a true limitation or if I just got a bad one? It would be hard to record with this. The carrier would need to be muted whoever there is no modulation from the mic, or simply never use the balanced output. Is there any kind of factory reset procedure? I’m wondering if some previous setting is causing this.

    Thanks!

I was mistaken above. There is bleed through on the unbalanced output. It seems like it less apparent than on the other one but it’s also possible it’s just a less hot output. If I increase the synth volume it’s quite apparent on the unbalanced though.
